Vápenky and the History of Lime Mining

Vápenky was established below the Javořina massif towards the end of the 18th century as a workers’ settlement on the border of the then estates of Ostroh and Strážnice. The name Vápenky derives from the historical lime mining carried out to meet the needs of the glassworks in Květná. Numerous picturesque folk houses have been preserved there and are protected as a heritage conservation area. This combination of settlement history, craftsmanship and regional architecture adds a clear cultural focus to the hiking trails.

Church and Living Traditions

The history of Nová Lhota includes today’s Church of St. Matthew. It was founded in 1729, is dedicated to Saint Matthew and has a side altar dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

The village differs from other Horňácko villages above all in its language, dress, dance style and several distinctive dance forms. Central dances include sedlácké and konopice; their older forms show features of dances from the mountain regions.
