Šatov combines border history with a distinctive wine culture. At the southern edge of the village is a fortification complex open to the public; above the village, the Malovaný sklep surprises visitors with three-dimensional paintings. An easy educational trail adds viticulture and monuments to the story of the village.

Šatov at a glance

  • The fortification complex at the southern edge of the village includes the MJ–S 3 “Zahrada” infantry bunker.
  • Wine was never produced or stored in the Malovaný sklep.
  • Šatov is a village conservation zone with centuries-old houses, wine cellars and wine-press houses in its cadastral area.
  • The educational vineyard features 19 old grape varieties, each with an information panel.

Border history and protected buildings

The československého opevnění v Šatově complex is on the southern edge of the village and is open to the public. It includes the reconstructed MJ–S 3 “Zahrada” infantry bunker, which has been restored to its 1980s condition. Inside are two fortress cannons, as well as heavy and light machine guns. There is also a nine-metre-high watchtower nearby. These specific installations and exhibits bring the history of the border to life and provide a focus for a visit.

The Boží hrob Chapel is also among Šatov’s protected cultural heritage: its designation covers the chapel, the surrounding wall, the gate and the associated plots within the site. Šatov is also a village conservation zone. Numerous centuries-old houses, wine cellars and wine-press houses throughout the cadastral area form part of its historic building stock. The character of the village can therefore be discovered not only through individual buildings, but also through its traditional village layout.

Wine cellars and old grape varieties

The Malovaný sklep is a wine cellar in a sandstone slope above Šatov, with walls decorated with three-dimensional paintings. Its history is particularly unusual: wine was neither produced nor stored here. The name of the wine cellar thus contrasts with a use that had nothing to do with viticulture. The painted wall surfaces are what set it apart from a cellar whose significance would lie solely in storing wine.

The educational vineyard of old grape varieties offers another perspective on the wine tradition. It was established in 2001 and features 19 varieties that originally grew in Czech and Moravian vineyards. Each variety has its own information panel with basic details. Anyone interested in the diversity of older vines can view the individual names and information side by side here. Together with the Malovaný sklep, the vineyard presents two different ways of exploring the subject: historic grape varieties on the one hand, and a painted cellar that was used neither to produce nor to store wine on the other.

An educational trail through history and viticulture

The “Za historií, vínem a opevněním ŠATOVA” educational trail is an easy circular route of about 3.5 kilometres through themes relating to local history and viticulture. The elevation changes are moderate; those wishing to extend the walk can add about one kilometre. Its 18 information panels cover the history of the border village, fortifications and military bunkers, notable monuments, and Šatov’s long-standing winegrowing tradition. The trail is therefore a useful guide if you would like to explore several of these topics on one walk, without being limited to a single area of interest.

Events and choosing a hotel

Events also bring different highlights to the year. Dny otevřených sklepů is one of the popular events in June. Toulky vinicemi Šatova is an event held in August that takes visitors through the vineyards. In November, the Festival mladých vín takes place—a wine festival associated with the traditional St Martin’s wine festival. If an event determines your travel dates, check the exact dates for the year in question.

The topics you would like to focus on during your stay can also help with planning when to visit: exploring the educational trail, visiting the wine cellars and attending an event each offer a different focus. If your trip depends on a particular date, it is worth checking the event date against the availability of your preferred accommodation.
