Zvotoky – Village Green, Historical Traces and Trails
Accommodation in Zvotoky
Two small streams meet in the built-up area of Zvotoky; some sections run through culverts. This detail gives the village a clearly recognizable landscape structure that connects with historical traces and marked trails. If you choose a stay not only based on accommodation but also on possible daily activities, Zvotoky offers several different starting points for this.
Village Green and Evidence of the Village’s History
The Chapel of the Guardian Angels stands on the village green in Zvotoky. It dates from the late 18th century and is therefore one of the older visible historical features of the village. A monument to the fallen also stands on the village green. Both points are located in the same place described here, but represent different aspects of the village’s history: the chapel refers to the religious tradition, while the monument commemorates the fallen.
Several historic crosses in Zvotoky date mainly from the 19th century. Together with the preserved remains of historic field patterns, they broaden the view beyond individual buildings. The field patterns address an older arrangement of the landscape, while the crosses and the chapel add individual religious or commemorative-historical accents. Those interested in smaller local features rather than a single major attraction will therefore find various traces in Zvotoky that come together conceptually to form an image of the village.
The Former Granite Quarry on Tyterec
North of Zvotoky, a former granite quarry lies on Mount Tyterec. A particular type of blue granite was extracted there; today, the quarry is flooded. The site therefore represents both a former use and a significantly transformed landscape. The historical classification is important: this is not an extraction operation currently in use, but a former quarry whose present condition is shaped by flooding.
Hiking, Cycling and the Hůrecká svatyně
A green-marked hiking trail runs through Zvotoky. For cyclists, cycle route No. 1066 continues through the village to Hoslovice. Another documented route is cycle route No. 1069: it follows the route of road III/17014 between Hoslovice and Horažďovice. Together with the hiking trail, these provide several ways to explore Zvotoky and the surrounding area on marked routes.
Southeast of Zvotoky, the Hůrecká svatyně, a group of stones, lies on Hůrka Hill. It served a ritual as well as an astronomical and calendrical function. The latter term refers to a connection with observing the course of the year and celestial phenomena. As a result, in addition to its visible form, the group of stones also has a cultural and historical significance that goes beyond that of an ordinary landscape formation.
Guidance for Choosing Your Stay
Local bus services operate in the Zvotoky area. When choosing accommodation, the village can therefore be considered according to your preferred focus: the village green brings together the chapel, monument and local history; the trails are more suitable for planning centered on hiking or cycling; the former quarry and the Hůrecká svatyně add further landscape and cultural-historical points of interest. This keeps Zvotoky interesting for different ways of spending the day without combining the individual sites into a single attraction.
