Lažany Between Castle History and Village Life

Lažany combines historical traces, a distinctive castle park and regular events. If you are looking for a place with culture, local traditions and sporting occasions for your trip, Lažany offers several different themes to consider when planning. Its history reaches far back: Lažany were first mentioned in 1384; at that time, the place belonged to Ježek of Lažany.

The Castle and Castle Park as Historical Anchors

The fortress of Lažany was converted into a castle at the end of the 16th century. A second Baroque wing was added in 1760. Thus, Lažany is defined not only by a single historical date, but by architectural development spanning several centuries.

The castle park is part of the Lažany castle complex and covers an estimated 2.5 hectares. Its present-day design follows the English landscape Romanticism of the period after the mid-19th century. Alongside the castle architecture, a distinct park landscape therefore shapes the complex. The castle and park create different accents within the same historic place: the building represents architectural development, while the park represents a later design language influenced by England. Those interested in historic sites can therefore view architecture and landscape in Lažany as two interconnected yet clearly distinct aspects of the castle complex.

Events with Tradition and Competition

The annual events calendar includes the burning of the witches on April 30, known in Czech as pálení čarodějnic. A Nohejbal tournament takes place in June. These dates are particularly interesting for your travel planning if, in addition to the castle and park, you would also like to take local customs and sporting events into account.

The most important event in Lažany is the Pouťový turnaj in small-sided football. It takes place on the first weekend of the school holidays and is contested for the mayor’s traveling trophy. The events are held in spring, in June and during the holiday period, combining tradition with sporting competition. In addition, there are holiday events with competitions organized together with the owners of holiday homes. A sports ground for small-sided football, Nohejbal and tennis has also been created in Lažany.

Settlement Structure and Orientation

The settlement structure of Lažany consists of houses by the local castle on the access road from Strakonice, as well as the “Sázky” district, approximately 250 metres away. The two areas are roughly 250 metres apart. At the castle, the access road from Strakonice provides the local point of reference, while Sázky, as a separate district, represents a different point of reference within Lažany. For choosing accommodation, therefore, the location by the castle or in Sázky marks a concrete difference.

Another point of reference lies south of Lažany: Road bridge no. 1731-12 is located on the dam that divides the Kořenský pond, in the direction of Doubravice. This specific reference adds the connection between settlement, road and pond landscape to the overall picture of the place.
