Zvíkovské Podhradí: Castle, Waterways and Forest Landscape

Zvíkovské Podhradí combines castle history, riverside landscapes and forest paths into a diverse destination in the Czech Republic. Particularly characteristic is the location of Zvíkov Castle at the Orlík Reservoir, at the confluence of the Vltava and Otava rivers. The castle stands on a rocky promontory and is located about one kilometre from Zvíkovské Podhradí. This brings culture and landscape together within a small geographical area, without any specific accommodation location necessarily being inferred from this.

Zvíkov Castle and Stone Landmarks

Zvíkov Castle can also be visited independently, without a guide. Within its grounds, the Chapel of Saint Wenceslas conveys a particularly distinctive historical impression: its structure has been preserved in the form it had in the 13th century. The Hlízová Tower is the oldest surviving building in the castle grounds at Zvíkov and was built around 1240. For your visit, this means encountering different historical periods within the same castle complex, from medieval structures to later additions.

Another striking structure is located in Zvíkovské Podhradí. The stone bridge dates from the second half of the 18th century and bears the construction year 1777. It crosses a deep neck ditch carved into the rock, rests on high pillars and has five arches. There is also a niche chapel on the bridge. These architectural details in particular make it an independent destination alongside a visit to the castle.

Hiking and Cycling between the Otava and Vltava

The mixed and coniferous forests around Zvíkovské Podhradí invite you to go hiking. The new riverside path along the Otava and Vltava complements the forest landscape with a route featuring twelve stations. These focus on the history, fauna and flora of the region. You can therefore make an excursion about more than just walking along the riverbank, while also learning about regional natural and cultural topics.

The Orlík–Zvíkovské Podhradí educational trail is approximately 30 kilometres long and has 15 information boards. It begins at Orlík Castle and leads to Zvíkovské Podhradí; it can be divided into the Orlík–Nevězice and Nevězice–Zvíkovské Podhradí sections. Those who prefer cycling can use cycle route No. 1149, which ends in Zvíkov. In addition, the 150-kilometre Pootavská cycling route runs from Modrava in Šumava to Zvíkov. This allows you to distinguish between a locally focused excursion, a long educational trail and a supraregional cycling tour.

Water Activities and Excursions

During the season, regular boat services operate on the Orlík Reservoir to Zvíkov Castle and Orlík Chateau. This provides another way to experience the two historic destinations in connection with the reservoir. For days with children, the Zvíkovské Podhradí outdoor swimming pool offers two children's pools with heated water and a larger pool for swimmers. In addition to castles, hiking trails and cycling routes, this provides a dedicated bathing facility in the village.
