Přeštěnice: Chapels, Views and Equestrian Events

Přeštěnice appeals to travellers who want to discover a Czech village with a visible history, scenic views and a range of activities. The Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary stands in the village square. At the same time, the Stráže hill, cycling route 1059, equestrian events and a regularly held music festival provide different possible focuses for a stay. Chapels and Local History

The Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was blessed on 15 August 1883; the first mass was celebrated there on that day. The altarpiece was created by the academic painter Jan Heřman from Prague. Another special feature is the Koutník Chapel next to house no. 35 in the lower part of Přeštěnice. It was built in 1933 in connection with the reported recovery of František Koutník’s son.

Smaller religious buildings with clearly dated histories can also be found in other villages: Mlčkov has a wayside shrine chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Sepekov from 1795, while Týnice has a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Klášter from 1884. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity in Držkrajov was built in its present form in 1907. The first historical mention of Přeštěnice dates from 1379. Historically, the village belonged to the Rožmberk family’s estates, which were connected with Příběnice Castle. A regional comparison of the construction years 1795, 1884, 1907 and 1933 adds several chronological layers to the local history of Přeštěnice.

Stráže, the Cycling Route and Equestrian Experiences

At 610 metres above sea level, Stráže is the highest hill in Přeštěnice. In clear weather, the view from there reaches as far as the distant Šumava mountains. Přeštěnice also has a foothill character; the village itself offers beautiful views as well. The landscape can therefore be viewed from two perspectives: from the village’s highest hill and from Přeštěnice itself. Cycling route 1059 passes through the Přeštěnice area, adding a specific connection with cycling to the village’s scenic appeal.

The Jezdecký klub Bártův dvůr Přeštěnice offers riding lessons for children and beginners under the guidance of experienced, licensed instructors. Every year, the club organises equestrian competitions, including qualifiers for the Zlatá Podkova competition. Riding lessons are aimed at children and beginners, while the annual competitions also include qualifiers for Zlatá Podkova. Families who want to combine different interests can therefore choose from clearly distinct themes: nature, local history, equestrian sport and events. The Open Air Music fest Přeštěnice is a regularly held festival featuring music groups. For 15 August 2026, a Přeštěnická pouť described as traditional was announced in Přeštěnice.
