Zebrakov: Village Heritage Conservation, Forest and Orlík Reservoir

Žebrákov combines village history with a varied landscape of stream, forest and water. The village is designated as a village heritage conservation zone in the Písek District, offering a particularly tangible connection to the region’s culture. At the same time, Žebrákov is primarily a recreational destination. This creates a place where cultural discoveries and observations of nature can be combined.

Village Culture and Local History

A chapel stands in the centre of Žebrákov. It is one of the village’s visible landmarks and complements the important ensemble of rural folk architecture, which was built predominantly using log construction. It is precisely this combination of an individual chapel, a protected village character and traditional architecture that makes Žebrákov interesting for travellers who want to discover not only individual sights but also the established structure of a Czech village.

The local history also includes František Kuchta, who was a notable local personality in the first half of the 20th century. He was also known as “žebrákovský Cimbura” and “strejc Franc”. The historic site “Lety u Písku. Memorial to the Holocaust of Roma and Sinti in Bohemia” is also located near Žebrákov. The Church of Svatý Jan is likewise situated in the vicinity of Žebrákov.

Stream, Valley and Forest Landscape

The Žebrákovský Stream flows through Žebrákov and winds through a picturesque valley. It flows into the longest bay of the Orlík Reservoir, which is 2.1 kilometres long. The landscape thus extends from the village through the valley to a prominent body of water. The area around the Žebrákovský Stream is wooded and forms the largest forest complex in the Kovářovsko area. Together with the stream flowing through Žebrákov, two different landscape elements meet here: the enclosed forest environment and the watercourse that flows into the longest bay of the Orlík Reservoir. The wildlife thus complements the landscape connection between the village, valley and reservoir, without the forest appearing merely as a backdrop. The stream introduces a linear landscape form into the village, the forest represents the expanse of the natural area, and the reservoir bay marks the transition to the water in the wider surroundings.

Mount Hrby is located in the immediate vicinity of Žebrákov. The mountains Chlum, Jenšovice and Zvíkovec are also in the surrounding area. The mountains provide a different accent from the village centre, stream and forest. In the village, rural architecture and the chapel are at the centre, while the wooded surroundings, the Orlík Reservoir and the mountains place various landscapes side by side.
