Vydří

Vydří is a small Czech locality where cycling, landscape and local history come together within a compact thematic area. This creates an interesting choice between active routes and nature observation: the locality lies along two different cycling routes, while several local biocentres reveal the landscape around watercourses, ponds, wooded areas and wetlands.

Cycling through Vydří

The “Partnership Trail” cycling route runs from Lásenice through Vydří to Políkno. Its route follows paved asphalt surfaces and is suitable for all types of bicycles except racing bikes. This clearly distinguishes it from the “Nežárka” cycling route, which also passes through Vydří and is 53 km long. The “Nežárka” is suitable for trekking bikes. Anyone planning a cycling tour can therefore assess Vydří based on the documented route characteristics: the “Partnership Trail” describes a connection between several localities, while the “Nežárka” is a longer route with its own bicycle recommendation.

Ponds and biocentres in the landscape

North of Vydří lies Horní rybník, an ecologically significant landscape feature and local biocentre. This includes the pond as well as the bank and associated vegetation. The entire shore is lined with a distinctive, relatively broad littoral zone, meaning a clearly defined vegetated area along the shore. This structure makes the pond an important refuge for amphibians, waterbirds and small birds, as well as other organisms in the agricultural landscape.

A different landscape can be found at the local biocentre “Pod Šimáčkovým vrchem”. There, small wooded areas, forests, and managed and unmanaged grass- and herb-covered areas alternate. Wetland communities add to this mosaic. For visitors who, during a trip through the Czech Republic, want to experience not only individual viewpoints but also different types of landscape, this documented variety provides a distinctive feature.

The “Na soutoku” biocentre lies at the confluence of Vydřího potok with an unnamed right-bank tributary from Žabov pond. The precise description of its location alone makes it clear that watercourses determine the character of this natural area. Together with Horní rybník and “Pod Šimáčkovým vrchem”, this creates an image of Vydří shaped beyond its cycling routes by bodies of water, bank vegetation and small-scale, varied habitats.

A Place with History

Vydří was founded in 1365 as part of the Stráž estate. This year adds a historical dimension to today’s nature and cycling experiences. The locality can therefore be viewed not only through its position along the cycling routes or its biocentres, but also through its incorporation into the region’s medieval estate history.
