Lomnice Nad Luznicí: Nature Reserve and Historic Churches
Between Wetlands and Cultural History
Lomnice Nad Luznicí combines a water-rich setting with a remarkable concentration of historic sites. South of Lomnice nad Lužnicí, the Velký a Malý Tisý National Nature Reserve lies nearby. Its mosaic of open water surfaces and adjacent wetland vegetation forms a clear landscape contrast to the city’s churches and older buildings. If you would like to combine nature observation and cultural history on your trip, you will find different themes here without having to assume a single type of experience.
Educational Trail, Plant Life and Fishing
The Velký Lomnický Educational Trail is 6.5 km long in total and has 15 stations. The first station is located on Zámecká Street, in the car park by Farská louka. The fixed length and number of stations give you a concrete basis for fitting this nature and educational trail into your daily itinerary. The landscape also points to notable plant occurrences: Lomnický velký rybník is considered one of the most important sites in the Třeboňsko region for slender cotton-grass (Coleanthus subtilis). The species occurs there regularly and in large numbers across an area of up to 1 ha.
Fishing is possible at Peřinka Pond for people who obtain a permit. The fishing season runs from April to October. In addition to the educational trail, this provides another clearly time-limited activity in the surrounding waterscape.
Churches and Historic Buildings
Kostel sv. Václava was founded in 1359 by Vilém ml. z Landštejna, originally as the castle chapel of Corpus Christi and Saints Peter and Paul. The Gothic vault dates from the construction period in 1359. Inside, an early Baroque altar with four side statues of saints defines the space. The statues were created in the workshop of the Bohemian-Budweis carpenter and woodcarver Jan Martin Schwarzmaier, around 1658.
Kostel sv. Jana Křtitele also reaches far back into the history of the town: an older sanctuary already stood on its site before the town was laid out and the castle was built. The painting of Saint John the Baptist on the main altar was created by Josef Peške from Lovosice in 1838. The imposing tower on the south side was probably built around the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries and is considered a typical Late Gothic work of the Rosenberg builders’ lodge. Stará radnice was built before 1604 and is registered as an immovable cultural monument.
For families who would like to bring together different interests, the educational trail stations, the waterscape and the historic interiors can be noted as different directions for exploration.
