Suchdol nad Lužnicí combines river landscapes, sand lakes and cycle routes with a distinctive historic building. If you would like to combine water experiences and active days with cultural discoveries during your stay, the town offers several different points of interest. When looking for accommodation, it is therefore worth deciding first what you would like to focus on: should the Lužnice be at the centre, a cycling tour through the surrounding area, or the landscape of the former sand-mining sites?

Church and Local History

A good cultural point of reference is the parish Church of St Nicholas, Kostel sv. Mikuláše. It was founded in Gothic form in 1363, rebuilt after 1440, and extended in 1820 by lengthening the nave and adding a tower. The building therefore tells the story of several construction phases and is one of the interesting stops if you would like to get to know Suchdol nad Lužnicí as more than just a starting point for activities.

The church is accessible during the day from the main entrance to the last pews at the back. For your planning, this means that a visit can be incorporated into your stay without making it revolve exclusively around a single attraction. Behind the church and the railway crossing in Suchdol nad Lužnicí, a section of the Paměti Vitorazska route also joins the main CC Lužnice route.

Cycling between the Lužnice and Vitorazsko

The 21.5-kilometre CC Lužnice cycle route runs from České Velenice to Klikov through Suchdol nad Lužnicí. In the town, it follows the eastern outskirts along the left bank of the Lužnice and one of its side channels.

Another option is the 9.8-kilometre themed Paměti Vitorazska cycle route. It leads from Dvory nad Lužnicí via Hrdlořezy and Tři Facky to Suchdol nad Lužnicí. Together with the connection behind the church, this offers a choice between a longer route along the Lužnice and a shorter themed route from the surrounding area. For families with children of different ages, this distinction may be more helpful when planning the day than a general collection of excursion destinations.

Sand Lakes, Nature Monument and Water Experiences

The lakes of Pískovna Tušť were created through sand mining. Today, they are used mainly for summer recreation, swimming and fishing. The Velká pískovna in this area can be reached from Suchdol nad Lužnicí by car or bicycle. Pískovna Tušť also belongs to the Lužnice 10B 421 042 fishing district.

A different type of landscape can be seen at Pískovna u Dračice, east of Suchdol nad Lužnicí near Františkov, a district of the town. The 7.5-hectare nature monument is surrounded mainly by pine and spruce trees. Its boundary is defined by grass-covered side areas, roads, pastures and the gravel-and-sand terraces of the Dračice stream along its left bank. An information board describes the area, its inhabitants and the rules of conduct for visitors; it also forms part of the Třeboňsko bird protection area.

If you would like to combine nature observation with a playful task, the excursion Za vodníky k pískovnám do Suchdola nad Lužnicí involves searching for letters hidden on information boards and discovering film locations, plants and animals. For another water-themed experience, there is the traditionally organised tour Odemykání Lužnice. It starts at 10:00 a.m. at the Suchdol water base near the Klikov bridge and includes a river trip on the Lužnice departing from Suchdol nad Lužnicí.
