Discover Bednárec: Village Square, Lipina and Kopec

Bednárec brings together historical features, protected landscape and remarkable views within a compact area. The village square, the Lipina protected area and the Kopec lookout point offer different focuses for exploring the village. A railway line runs on an embankment several metres high directly above the village square, making it part of the village’s unusual appearance. The combination of structure, natural surroundings and distant views creates a distinctive impression of Bednárec.

Chapel and Art History on the Village Square

The Chapel of Our Lady stands on the village square in Bednárec, where it was built in 1795. Its polygonal bell tower with an onion dome gives the building a distinctive feature. The chapel is thus a visible part of the village square and connects the centre of the village with a historic building. The history of Bednárec also includes the Pietà of Bednárec, a Late Gothic wooden sculpture created at the beginning of the 16th century. It remains the property of the municipality of Bednárec and is part of the permanent exhibition in Hluboká. This means that the village’s cultural connections extend beyond the village square and also include the presentation of the artwork in Hluboká.

Lipina and the Ponds in Černý les

The Lipina protected area lies along the banks of the meanders of the Žirovnička stream in Bednárec and is also a nature monument in the South Bohemian Region. It was established to protect an original lime-oak forest typical of warmer areas of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. The stream and the protected forest give this landscape its own character. East of Bednárec, Černý les is home to a cascade of four ponds: Jílků malý, Šedivů, Obecní velký and Obecní malý. Two water pools with adjacent wetlands were created at Obecní velký pond. These measures increased water-retention capacity and biodiversity in the surrounding area. Thus, meanders, forest, ponds and wetlands meet around Bednárec, forming several different natural features.

Wide Views from Kopec

From the upper part of the village, Kopec, there are views of Jindřichohradecko and Kamenicko. From the Kopec lookout point, you can also see the Novohrad Mountains and the Bohemian Forest. In exceptionally clear conditions, the Alps may also be visible from there. Kopec adds a perspective to Bednárec’s historical and landscape features that extends far beyond the immediate surroundings of the village.

The Reconciliation Stone near Bednárec

A reconciliation stone stands before Bednárec on the road from Jarošov nad Nežárkou to Bednárec. It is believed to mark the grave of a man and a woman from the Swedish Wars. This memorial site adds another historical reference to the chapel, the Pietà and the natural monuments. Thus, within a compact area, you encounter visible buildings, art history, landscape protection and an inherited tradition of remembrance.
