Rapšach: History, Historical Trail and Nature in the Dračice Area
Rapšach combines historical discoveries with nature experiences and opportunities for a cycling trip. Particularly characteristic are St. Zikmund Church, the virtual historical trail “A Village Affected by History” and the landscape in the Dračice area. This allows you to explore cultural themes, physical activity and nature observation with different focuses.
St. Zikmund Church and History in Rapšach
St. Zikmund Church in Rapšach was built around 1450. During a renovation in 1890, it received a Neo-Gothic tower. The entire church building is listed as a heritage site, providing a concrete historical connection for exploring Rapšach.
A special form of presenting history is “A Village Affected by History”. The virtual historical trail is not signposted in the landscape and can be completed with the help of an accompanying brochure. It is approximately 10 km long and can be explored in several sections. Most of the stations contain questions or tasks, especially for children. This makes the trail an opportunity not merely to observe historical topics, but to engage with them together.
Cycling Route and Cultural Event
Cycling Route No. 3, “Vitorazská jízda 2018”, passes through Rapšach. It is part of a regional circular route connecting České Velenice, Klikov and the border crossing. Anyone wishing to discover Rapšach by bicycle can use a section of this circular route. The route complements the historical focus with an active form of exploration.
At Rapšašské Zikmundohraní on May 1, 2026, the programme began with a mass at 8:00 a.m. At 9:00 a.m., a concert by the Rapšašker Chamber Orchestra and Choir followed; additional cultural programmes took place in the village square. The event shows that St. Zikmund Church is also connected with the cultural life of the village.
Pískovna u Dračice Nature Monument
The Pískovna u Dračice Nature Monument is located in the cadastral area of Rapšach, in a former gravel-sand pit. A regularly reproducing population of the endangered natterjack toad occurs there. The area is accessible to pedestrians and cyclists via public roads and paths. For your planning, this provides a nature destination that can be reached both on foot and by bicycle.
The Dračice area also includes a strongly winding, gorge-like river valley with a riverbed shaped by boulders. It includes a river ecosystem as well as associated habitats of protected plants and animals. This natural area therefore represents a different side of Rapšach from the church and historical trail: here, the river landscape, rocks and protected habitats shape the impression.
Which Focuses Suit You
If you are travelling with children, the questions and tasks at most of the historical trail’s stations provide a concrete opportunity for discovering things together. For days focused on culture, St. Zikmund Church and the documented date of Rapšašské Zikmundohraní take centre stage. Anyone wishing to combine nature and physical activity can include the public roads and paths near Pískovna u Dračice as well as Cycling Route No. 3 in their plans. The trail’s approximate length and division into several sections also help you compare different day plans.
