Strážkovice: Cycling and History on the Mountain
Strážkovice lies on the eastern slope of Strážkovická hora. At 557 m, it is the highest point in the municipality of Strážkovice. In favorable weather, the view extends far across the surrounding area and sometimes as far as the Alps. If you would like to combine nature, cycling and history on your trip, you will find a wide variety of points of interest here within a small area.
Hillside location and a village shaped by history
The Strážkovice forge, a technical monument, stands on the village green. It was probably used for its original purpose until 1969. The regular settlement layout, with its large, spacious village green, also tells the story of the village’s development: It indicates that the village was founded during the High Medieval colonization in the 13th or 14th century. Because of its historic buildings on the hilltop, Strážkovice is also one of the so-called “fire villages.” In times of danger, residents used fires at night to warn of approaching troops.
Cycling with clearly defined route profiles
The “Cycling through Doudlebsko and Novohradsko” route passes through Strážkovice. It is 110 km long in total and divided into stages of 58 km and 52 km. The route is considered moderately difficult to challenging and is suitable for trekking bikes and mountain bikes. The 63.7 km cycling trip “To the birthplace of Jan Žižka of Trocnov” is moderately difficult and suitable as a full-day excursion. The CT1121 offers a shorter orientation option within longer routes, passing through Strážkovice on the way from Střížov to Trocnov. A 73 km cycling route is recommended for the “Blacksmithing Trail.”
In the center of Strážkovice, next to the cultural center with a restaurant, there is a charging station for electric bicycles. It provides four bicycle stands and a compressor for inflating tires. This specific point in the village is therefore also of interest when planning a cycling tour, without requiring you to commit to a single route length.
Trocnov and other historic sites
Trocnov lies about 2 km east of Strážkovice and is a national cultural monument. The Trocnov complex has a marked circular trail with the remains of former farmsteads. Jan Žižka lived in one of them, and his uncle lived in the other. The complex also includes a memorial with a museum exhibition on the Hussite movement. The Church of St. Martin in Střížov, which serves as the parish church for Strážkovice, was consecrated in 1493.
Another small testament to the region’s history is the stone signpost in Strážkovice. It is considered a valuable and authentically preserved example of the small road infrastructure facilities that supplemented the expanding road networks in the 19th century. This makes it possible to shape a stay in different ways, combining scenic views, longer cycling routes and historic details.
