Hurr between Local History and Landscape

Hurr offers a view of a place where history, mining and themed trails are closely intertwined. The first documented mention of Hůry dates from 1378. At that time, Charles IV pledged the municipality to Jan of Leuchtenburk. Hůry was originally called “Německé Hory”.

The former way of life in the village has also been preserved in the records: In the past, the inhabitants of Hůry made their living from agriculture. At the same time, several historical testimonies point to the military and mining past. The former powder magazine in Hůry was part of a military complex that had existed since the 18th century and supplemented the fortification system of České Budějovice. The Eliášův důl silver mine in Hůry was established under Rudolf II; mining at the silver mine ended in 1909.

Several historical layers therefore converge in Hůry: its agriculturally shaped past, its military function in the area around České Budějovice and the history of silver mining. These themes give the place a character that can be found both in the village itself and on the themed trails in the surrounding area.

The Člověk a krajina Educational Trail

The Člověk a krajina educational trail offers a particularly vivid connection between the landscape and local history. It is 6 km long, leads from Nemanice, a district of České Budějovice, to Rudolfov and takes about four hours, including stops at the information boards. The educational trail comprises a total of 13 stations with information boards.

The information station in Hůry is titled “Hůry – Hurr – Německé Hory” and covers the history of Hůry as well as the influence of mining on the municipality. Another station, Hůrecká vyhlídka, explains the geological conditions of the surrounding area and includes a photographic panorama of the opposite side of the České Budějovice Basin. Because the texts on the individual information boards follow on from one another, the educational trail is recommended from Nemanice to Rudolfov. This direction gives the walk a coherent thematic progression.

The combination of a six-kilometre route and a duration of around four hours makes the stops an integral part of the tour. Anyone planning the educational trail should therefore consider not only the route itself, but also the time needed for the 13 information boards and the geological and historical topics along the way.

Chapel, Cycle Route and Bus Connection

The local architectural heritage includes the Chapel of St Florian. It stands on the slope in the village square of Hůry; its façade bears the year 1865. It thus adds a visible detail in the village centre to the historical sites of the area.

For cyclists, Cycle Route 1107 runs through Libníč, Hůry, Adamov and Rudolfov. For the chronological context of travel, it is also important to note that in 2024 there was a Jivno–Rudolfov–Hůry–Adamov–Rudolfov–Libníč–Jelmo bus connection with a link to public transport in Rudolfov.

The cycle route and educational trail therefore appeal to different ways of exploring the area. While the educational trail opens up the history and geology through its stations, the cycle route places Hůry within a sequence of several localities. The bus connection from 2024 adds historical transport information to this orientation without anticipating the current timetable.
