Staré Hobzí between the Church, the Dyje and the Mills

Staré Hobzí combines impressive church architecture, castle history and landscapes along the Dyje. Here you can discover historic architectural styles, mills along the river, guided walks and an unusual sculpture made of glacial erratics. The sights lie in different directions around the village and offer various ideas for a stay combining culture, nature and cycling.

Church, Castle and Art in the Village

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is located on the eastern edge of Staré Hobzí on the road to Jemnice. It preserves architectural elements from the Early Gothic, High Gothic, Late Gothic, Early Baroque and Neoclassical periods. At the same time, it documents the development of ecclesiastical architecture in the region from the 13th to the 18th century. A statue of Saint Margaret stands beside the church.

The castle in Staré Hobzí stands on the site of a former fortress. The castle includes the Baroque Chapel of Saint Thomas; below the castle there is also a statue of the Immaculate Virgin Mary. The village therefore contains several independent cultural monuments that fit into an exploration of historic architecture, without requiring you to limit yourself to just one period.

Loucký mlýn and the River Landscape

Loucký mlýn lies on the left bank of the Dyje on the road from Staré Hobzí to Slavonice, northwest of the river bridge. The mill complex includes a stone millrace and a weir on the Dyje. The weir directs water into the channel, which carries it to the mill building and then back into the riverbed. The technical connection between the weir, channel, mill and river also makes the site interesting for visitors who want to understand historical water use in the landscape.

Walks and Cycling Trips along the Dyje

The Vydří stezka runs along the Dyje between Dačice and Staré Hobzí. Guided walks are offered along this route. Another way to explore the surroundings is a cycling trip between Dačice and Staré Hobzí along the Moravská Dyje. Along the way, you can discover historic water mills, including Loucký mlýn. This allows you to combine a cultural route with exercise through the river landscape, while the guided walks offer a different way to experience the route.

Glacial Erratics and Natural Forests

The Kameny přání lie west of Staré Hobzí on the banks of the Dyje. They are part of Kristkova podyjská glyptotéka and form a sculpture by Lubo Kristek consisting of seven glacial erratics. The Mutenská obora provides a distinctly nature-oriented contrast: this regionally significant complex comprises old, near-natural deciduous forests with species-rich ground flora as well as diverse bird and insect fauna.
