Staňkov U Třeboně – Pond, Peat Bog and Cycling Trails

Staňkov U Třeboně reveals its character at Staňkov Pond: the pond shapes the landscape, and the village lies below its high dam. Staňkov Pond as the centrepiece

The dam of Staňkov Pond is 18 metres high and is described as the highest pond dam in the Czech Republic. Staňkov Pond is considered a popular destination for summer recreation, family holidays, fishing and swimming. Paddleboard and boat hire are available at the pond; Rybářství Třeboň operates recreational and sport fishing there. From Staňkov, you can reach the pond by car or bicycle. Rašeliniště Pele: protected peatland

The Rašeliniště Pele nature reserve is a protected peat bog in an early stage of development. It lies partly within Staňkov’s cadastral area and is considered unusual within the peat-rich Třeboň Basin. From the settlement of Pele, the area is accessible to the public via a forest track. Floating mats of sphagnum moss are home to round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) and a large population of the lesser bladderwort (Utricularia minor). The bog provides a habitat for, among others, the noble crayfish (Astacus astacus) and the dragonfly species Leucorrhinia rubicunda. Alongside the experience of being by the pond, this places a distinctive natural feature at the centre of attention.

Cycling trails and a recurring summer event

Cycle route CT1014 runs from Chlum u Třeboně through Staňkov; swimming is possible at Staňkov Pond. Cycle route CT322 leads from the edge of Staňkov towards Smírčí vrch and onwards to Dolní pstruhový rybník. The two routes have different focuses: one connects Chlum u Třeboně with Staňkov, while the other starts at the edge of the village and leads to another pond. Since its first edition in 2021, the Na břehu festival has taken place regularly every year on the last weekend of July. Crafts and historical traces

Historical local crafts in Staňkov included pottery, brickmaking and the production of wooden shingles. Burning wood tar in several kilns played a special role. On the route from Staňkov to Chlum u Třeboně stand small Baroque roadside shrines known as Boží muka. Their pedestal bears the year “1820”, probably carved at a later date; they also belong to the type with Tuscan columns. The history of Staňkov Pond is likewise associated with a cautious dating: it may have been built in 1551–1559 by Mikuláš Ruthart on the former border stream Hostice.
