Pluhův Žďár: Castle History, Church and Cycling Routes

Pluhův Žďár lies at the transition between Třeboňsko and the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. The castle, church and cycling route bring together different ways of exploring the area: historic architecture, local history with medieval and Baroque traces, and a family-friendly cycling circuit. The wider regional surroundings include the rybník Králek nature monument. This makes it possible to plan a stay combining cultural interests and landscape experiences without conflating the individual highlights. The character of the locality emerges from the coexistence of heritage conservation, sacred architectural history and a themed cycling experience.

Cultural History Around the Castle and Church

Pluhův Žďár Castle is a protected cultural monument. The first documentary mention of the castle site dates from 1267; at that time, it was owned by Oldřich Pluh z Rabštejna. The documentary mention concerns the castle site; it does not date the present building. The castle courtyard contains rare Baroque frescoes created by the painter František Resch in 1718.

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary also combines religious tradition with a clearly recognizable architectural history. Its former chapel was built over a spring in 1542, whose water was said to have miraculous effects. In 1717, it was extended by a nave and its tower was raised. The church has a single nave and is unoriented; its presbytery faces north and is closed on three sides, with a prismatic tower in front of it. The north-facing presbytery and the projecting prismatic tower give the church a clearly describable external layout. A further renovation followed in 1861. For visitors interested in culture, this building brings together tradition, extension and later alteration. Its architectural history thus spans the 16th to the 19th century.

Cycling with Different Themes

For active days, the “Přes památky do pohádky” cycling circuit passes through Pluhův Žďár. The themed circuit is suitable for families with children and presents historic monuments in a playful fairy-tale format. A 25 km route begins and ends in Deštná. The combination of a fixed route length, a circuit format and thematic presentation makes the route easy to plan for a day trip: its extent is known, and the start and finish are in the same place. The fixed distance and identical starting and finishing point support the time planning of a circuit ride without assuming a specific riding duration. The focus is not solely on cycling, as historic monuments are part of the route's content.

The rybník Králek nature monument belongs to the wider regional surroundings of Pluhův Žďár. It broadens the view beyond the two buildings to the regional landscape. This means that different interests can be considered separately when planning a trip: castle and church history on the one hand, and cycling and natural areas on the other.
