Mišovice: Museum, Church and Celtic Traces

Mišovice combines local history, sacred buildings and traces of Celtic settlement with surroundings ideal for hiking, cycling and walks in the forest. The history comes particularly vividly to life in the village district of Pohoří and at the Mirovicka Museum. Pohoří: Museum and Local History

The Mirovicka Museum is located in Pohoří, a district of the municipality of Mišovice. It comprises a total of ten exhibition sections: eight are housed in the main building, while two others are located in a former parish barn near the museum building. Local history is therefore not confined to a single exhibition, but is presented across several spatially separate areas.

One section is devoted to geology, mining, mineralogy and living nature. It explains the geological structure of the region and its immediate surroundings, describes mining activities in various parts of the Mirovicka area, and covers the Celts’ gold panning at Skalica as the region’s oldest mining activity.

Church of St Peter and St Paul in Pohoří

The Church of St Peter and St Paul dates from the late 13th century and is mentioned as early as 1369. The church complex lies in the eastern part of Pohoří on a slight rise and forms an important urban-planning feature within the built-up area of the village.

The church has an unused cemetery enclosed by a cemetery wall with an entrance on the western side. Together, the church, cemetery and wall form a coherent ensemble. In front of the western cemetery wall, south of the cemetery entrance, stands a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk.

Celtic Traces Around Pohoří

On Hrad Hill, several kilometres southeast of Pohoří, lie the ruins of a Late Hallstatt-period fortification dating from the time of Celtic settlement. In Bohemia, this settlement is associated with the Boii tribe. Approximately 1 km south of the Hrad fortification, several Late Hallstatt-period burial mounds are located in the forest on Malý Kosatín Hill. The inhabitants of this fortification were presumably buried in them.

Mišovice itself also has a protected historic monument: the pillar-shaped wayside shrine stands in front of the gabled façade of house no. 34, is visible from a considerable distance, and forms an important urban-planning feature of the municipality. The Chapel of St Lawrence lies approximately 300 m east of Svučice on the road to Mišovice.

Hiking and Cycling in the Surroundings

The surroundings of Mišovice are suitable for hiking and cycling, walks in the forest, and exploring the countryside. For cyclists, route CT311 also provides a specific point of reference: it leads from Mirovice via Mišovice and onwards through Minice to Pohoří. This makes it possible to combine local history, cultural experiences and outdoor activity in a single stay.
