City History in Exhibitions and Buildings

The “Příběh města” exhibition at the South Bohemian Museum is dedicated to the history of České Budějovice and displays artefacts from the time of the city’s founding. The exhibition includes a free mobile app with a virtual guide in Czech and English at twelve stations. The twelve stations provide the visit with a clear sequence, while the artefacts form the historical framework of the exhibition.

Historical topics also include the Rabenštejnská věž, a four-storey tower from the 14th century and one of two surviving towers of the former fortifications of České Budějovice, as well as the former Dominican monastery with the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary. It is one of the oldest and most valuable historical monuments in České Budějovice. Náměstí Přemysla Otakara II. covers more than one hectare and is one of the largest square town squares in the Czech Republic. The stone basin of the Samson Fountain has a diameter of 15 metres and is also one of the largest in the Czech Republic.

Waterways with Different Route Formats

The Vltava Trail offers a 98-kilometre water route from the Lannova loděnice in České Budějovice via Hluboká nad Vltavou to Týn nad Vltavou and onwards to Koloděje nad Lužnicí. It also includes 60 kilometres of developed paths along the Vltava for cycling, inline skating and walking. The water route and the paths along the river therefore represent different ways of experiencing the surroundings: a longer connection between several places and developed paths along the riverbank.

For historical orientation, the “Kolem hradeb” route complements the city’s history. It leads to the Rabenštejnská věž and Železná panna stations. The first permanent exhibition about Přemysl Otakar II. is located partly in the Gothic Železná panna tower and comprises 15 panels about the king’s life and political career. The two stations anchor the historical course of the route in specific buildings.
