Discover Olešná: Vltava, Orlík Reservoir and Culture

Olešná is a place whose landscape is shaped by water and a valley. The Vltava forms the western boundary of the municipality; the right bank between river kilometres 183.4 and 185.5 is affected. Olešná developed in a valley around the Velký potok and on the banks of the Vltava. The small watercourse flows through the built-up area. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore consider Olešná as a destination for a trip that combines landscapes, routes and cultural sites without equating the individual destinations geographically.

Water landscapes and routes around Olešná

Existing hiking and cycling trails run along the shores of the Orlík Reservoir in the Olešná area. The Vltava and the Orlík Reservoir are considered to be the area's central potential for recreational use. The Orlík Reservoir in the wider area particularly attracts people interested in water sports and sailing. In the village, the Skalica sports complex, with sports fields, courts and a children's playground, is one of the facilities. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between shore routes, water-sports activities and local sports facilities. Traditional events in Olešná formerly included, among other things, the burning of witches, the raising of the maypole, summer sports days, children's events, fishing events and gatherings of former residents.

Bridges as visible landmarks

In the vicinity of Olešná, the Podolský Bridge spans the Vltava on the Písek–Tábor road. It was built between 1939 and 1943 and is 510 metres long. Olešná also has a listed bridge over the Velký potok. Thus, a bridge on a main road and a listed structure in the village represent two different historical points of reference.

Churches, viewpoints and history

The surroundings of Chřešťovice also combine water and history. The Church of Saint John the Baptist from the 14th century stands there on the left bank of the Vltava. In the past, the church was reached from Olešná by ferry across the Vltava; the ferry connection should therefore be understood as a historical link. The railway bridge near Červená nad Vltavou was also built in the nearby area between 1886 and 1889; it is 253 metres long.

The Skály viewpoint lies about 1 kilometre south of Olešná and offers views of the Vltava in the Orlík Reservoir. Mount Tábor (Burkovák) lies 5 kilometres southeast of Olešná and is considered a Celtic cult site as well as a Bronze Age and Hallstatt-period burial site. The Church of Saint Bartholomew dates from 1190 and was relocated above the flood level in 1960 because of the construction of the Orlík Reservoir.
