Kristanov – Cultural Landscape, Trails and Wildlife Observation

Křišťanov combines local history, protected landscapes and various opportunities to explore the surroundings on foot or by bicycle. Between the church, cultural landscape, marked trails and wildlife observation, different facets come together to shape a stay.

Protected landscape around Křišťanov

The project area of the Blanice NPP encompasses the cadastral area of Křišťanov. Part of Křišťanov’s cultural landscape lies within the Šumava Protected Landscape Area. The protected surroundings thus form an independent part of the village and stand on an equal footing with its historical traces. Here, the landscape and local history can be experienced together, without limiting the visit to a single attraction. For walks, hikes and trips through the surroundings, Křišťanov therefore provides a setting in which the natural environment and settlement history belong together.

Church and local history

Křišťanov was founded in 1694 near Prachatice. A prominent testament to the local history is the Church of the Name of the Lord Jesus. It was built in 1798–1799 and is a simple late Baroque building from the end of the 18th century. Its restrained architecture forms a clear contrast with the open landscapes outside the village and makes the church a cultural point of interest. Those interested in the development of villages and their historic buildings will find a tangible connection here to the history of Křišťanov. A visit to the church complements the nature experiences with a brief, independent part of exploring the village.

Hiking and cycling routes

From Prachatice, the footpath to Křišťanov follows a green-marked hiking trail; part of the route may run along the “Zlatá stezka” educational trail. The trail connects the starting point with Křišťanov and makes the journey itself part of the day. Those wishing to explore the surroundings by bicycle can use Cycling Route 1250, which passes through Křišťanov. Cycling Route 1252 begins at the crossroads near Křišťanov and continues via Arnoštov and the Záhvozdský potok stream to Pernek. When planning your day, you can therefore choose between a route through the village and a longer connection passing several landscape features.

The journey also offers two specific starting points: By car, you can reach Křišťanov from Prachatice via approximately 20 km and from Volary via approximately 15 km on Roads 141 and 165. The drive from Prachatice and the drive from Volary can thus be combined with different routes through the surroundings. This allows the journey to become part of your personal planning rather than merely marking the beginning of your stay.

Wildlife observation in the game reserve

At the aurochs, European bison and American bison reserve, visitors can use a wooden observation tower. From there, you can observe aurochs from a safe distance. The reserve is also home to European bison, American bison, as well as stags and hinds. The observation tower provides a fixed viewing point, while the various animal species create a distinct focus alongside the church, cultural landscape and trails. The reserve thus expands the range of experiences with a direct encounter with large grazing animals and adds an independent natural highlight to the surroundings of Křišťanov.
