Hosín – Church, Flying Experiences and Hosínské Orty

Hosín combines cultural history, air sports and an unusual landscape near České Budějovice. The village is especially suitable if, when planning your trip, you want to combine different experiences: a striking church, activities at the airport, a viewpoint with expansive views over the city and a former kaolin mining area of particular importance for bats.

Flying Experiences at Hosín Airport

At Hosín Airport, Aeroklub České Budějovice offers powered flights and gliding. Skydiving and pilot training are also available, including flying ultralight aircraft. The airport offers short 20-minute flights, longer flights lasting 40 to 60 minutes, as well as individual flights along a route of your choice. The 20-minute flights contrast with the longer flights of 40 to 60 minutes. With individual flights, on the other hand, the focus is on your own route. The options differ in terms of flight type, duration and route selection. These time periods provide a simple way to fit a shorter or longer flying experience into your stay. The route also allows you to customize the flight.

Church of Saints Peter and Paul

One of the village’s defining cultural monuments is the Church of Saints Peter and Paul. The present building was constructed as a pseudo-Romanesque church and completed and consecrated in September 1900. Its square bell tower rises 36 metres from the corner of the crossing. The building thus combines the later pseudo-Romanesque construction with older Romanesque elements.

The church also preserves older architectural elements and visual art. The original Romanesque church stands as a side chapel on its eastern side. Valuable frescoes dating from around 1340 have been preserved in the former Romanesque sacristy.

Hosínské Orty Between Natural and Industrial History

Hosínské Orty extend along the boundaries of the municipalities of Hosín, Borek and Hrdějovice near České Budějovice. The area forms a unique tunnel labyrinth created by former kaolin mining. For safety reasons, the underground system is officially inaccessible; numerous entrances are closed. At the same time, Hosínské Orty are one of the most important wintering sites for bats and horseshoe bats in South Bohemia. Thus, former mining facilities and an important wintering site for bats and horseshoe bats coexist in the same area. For visitors, this means that the underground passages are not accessible as a tour. When planning a visit, Hosínské Orty should therefore be regarded as a site of former raw-material extraction and as an important wintering site for bats and horseshoe bats.

U Borovice Viewpoint and Cycle Route 1054

Between Hosín and Hrdějovice, the U Borovice viewpoint offers a view across the entire city of České Budějovice. Cycle Route 1054 runs along the road next to the U Borovice viewpoint. Anyone using Cycle Route 1054 can consider the viewpoint as a possible stop along the route; the adjacent road provides a clear landmark for orientation.
