Cycling and River History along the Otava

Dolní Poříčí combines active exploration with an unusually vivid river history. This means you can get to know the area via two documented cycling routes while also discovering the role the Otava played in life in Dolní Poříčí and Horní Poříčí. Those looking for accommodation as a base for varied holiday activities will therefore find a place where cycling, water, and regional history are closely connected – without confusing the individual experiences with one another.

Two Cycling Routes with Different Itineraries

The 20 km cycling route “Along the Educational Trail” leads from Katovice via Střelské Hoštice, Zadní Hoštice, and Dolní Poříčí to Katovická (Kněží) hora and back to Katovice. The route makes Dolní Poříčí a specific section of a circular route connecting several places.

A second option is the 20.1 km cycling route “Natural Beauty”. It leads via Dolní Poříčí to Katovická (Kněží) hora and back to Katovice. The additional 0.1 km is only a minor difference; what matters more when choosing is the itinerary described for each route. When comparing the two options, you can therefore initially distinguish them by length and their respective stops, rather than treating them as the same route.

The Otava as Part of Local History

The Otava shaped historical life in Horní Poříčí and Dolní Poříčí. For a long time, freshwater pearl mussels lived in the river. Their harvesting was discontinued there in 1908 and was not resumed thereafter. This history therefore represents a former use of the river, not a present-day activity.

Rafting is also part of the Otava’s past. Timber from the Šumava forests was transported along the river to Prague; the first written mention of rafting dates from 1316. Another testament to regional development is a Francis turbine installed in the mill building in Dolní Poříčí. From 1919 onward, it supplied Dolní Poříčí and Horní Poříčí with electricity.

At the same time, the Otava is used for sport fishing and water sports. The local history therefore brings together former economic functions and present-day leisure activities. For travel planning, the river can thus be viewed from both a cultural and an active perspective.

Travel Information for Getting There

There is no ticket office at Dolní Poříčí railway station; tickets are sold on the train. This specific detail is one of the practical points you should take into account before travelling. The municipality of Horní Poříčí also has bus connections with surrounding towns. Both details concern different places or transport points and should therefore be incorporated separately into your plans.
