Škvořetice – Castle, Chapels and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Škvořetice
Škvořetice combines a distinctive castle complex with two chapels whose architectural forms create very different impressions. Cycling routes also pass through the village or include it in circular tours. This lets you consider historic architecture and possible tour ideas together—without confusing the buildings or routes with one another.
Škvořetice Castle: Older Core, Later Renovation
Škvořetice Castle stands on the northwestern edge of the village, with a park beside it. Its core dates from the early 16th century. In 1921–1922, the complex was renovated in a pseudorenaissance style under Karl Hildprandt, following plans by the master builder Vojtěch Volf of Beroun. The castle is in the Neo-Renaissance style. Its building history therefore spans from the early 16th century to this 20th-century renovation.
The two-storey, four-winged building has a rectangular ground plan and an inner courtyard. A three-storey tower rises at the northwestern corner, and a gallery runs at the level of the second storey. Renaissance plasterwork and traces of sgraffito have been preserved in the tower. Alongside its scale, these details give the complex a more delicate, handcrafted quality: visible traces of older design meet the later renovation on the tower. The castle is currently privately owned. If you are planning a visit, check access in advance.
Two Chapels with Different Architectural Forms
The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows is a Neo-Romanesque building with a rectangular nave, square chancel, apse and rectangular entrance porch on the western façade. Its history extends beyond the building itself: the present chapel was built in 1884 not far from an older shrine and was solemnly consecrated on September 3 of that year by the Bishop of Budweis, František de Paula, Count Schönborn-Buchheim-Wolfsthal. In the past, the chapel was a destination and venue for well-known pilgrimages.
Figurative and floral wall paintings from 1907 adorn the chapel in the style of the Beuron Art School. Following a renovation in 2020–2021, the restored chapel was blessed on May 7, 2022. It stands on the right-hand side of the road from the village square towards Buzice; parking is available nearby. Check local parking conditions before travelling.
The Chapel of the Holy Trinity creates a different architectural impression with its simple Neo-Gothic form. It does not face east and has a rectangular ground plan, a three-sided termination and a triangular gable. A prismatic bell turret with a pyramidal roof rises from the gable. Seeing both chapels reveals a clear contrast between the Neo-Romanesque spatial forms and the crisp silhouette of the Neo-Gothic building.
Cycling Routes and Circular Tours with Different Stops
Cycling Route No. 31 runs from Lom through Škvořetice and Buzice to Blatná. This section forms part of a circular route that goes from Blatná through Čekanice, Sedlice, Lom, Škvořetice and Buzice, and back to Blatná. Check the current signage before setting off.
Other routes differ mainly in their stops. The “Za sedlickou krajkou” excursion route runs from Blatná through Buzice, Škvořetice, Sedlice, Čekanice and Mačkov, and back to Blatná. A second cycling loop from Blatná goes via Paštiky, Chobot, Myštice, Lom and Škvořetice to Buzice and back. When comparing tours, you can first consider which places you would like to include in each loop. Check local conditions before setting off as well.
Another Destination in the Wider Region
In the wider region, not in Škvořetice itself, the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord stands on Křesovec Hill in Pacelice. It took on its present form in 1763–1765; its predecessor was an important pilgrimage site in the region. The church can be reached from Pacelice. There is a designated visitor car park on the eastern edge of the village, from which a lit forest path about 300 metres long leads to the church. Check local conditions for the car park and path before setting out.
