Rožmberk Castle and the Jakobínka Tower

Rožmberk Castle dates from the mid-13th century and is one of the oldest castles of the Vítkovci family. The main castle tour presents the Buquoy family, who owned the castle from 1620 until the end of the Second World War. Its current appearance is the result of a reconstruction in the Romantic Gothic style.

A particularly distinctive testimony to the older history is the Jakobínka Tower. It is the only surviving remnant of the former Upper Castle of Rožmberk. The climb leads up almost 170 steps and offers views of the entire double castle complex of Rožmberk and the surrounding landscape. Church, Cemetery and Town Fortifications

History can also be discovered in several layers within the town itself. The first written mention of St. Nicholas Church in Rožmberk dates from 1271. The church is a Late Gothic building from the second half of the 15th century and stands on older foundations.

The Old Jewish Cemetery is a surviving testimony to the Jewish settlement and the last reminder of the long-standing Jewish tradition directly in Rožmberk nad Vltavou. Around 24 tombstones have been preserved; the oldest dates from the mid-18th century. In the southern part of the town, remnants of the 14th-century town fortifications can also be seen.

The Vltava and Protected Landscape

For a more active excursion, the Vltava from Vyšší Brod is suitable for recreational sports enthusiasts, including beginners and families with children.
