Rokycany: Museums, Observatory and Historic Sites

Rokycany combines museums, historic monuments, astronomical discoveries and paths through distinctive landscapes. The town is therefore ideal for travelers who do not want to experience culture in isolation, but instead combine it with walks, geological history and excursions into the surrounding area. During the summer season, Koupaliště Rokycany also adds its own appeal: it is a swimming destination for family outings, relaxation and water-based fun.

Museums and Historic Traces in Rokycany

The Muzeum Dr. Bohuslava Horáka specializes in history, ethnography, paleontology and the natural sciences. Its visitor route includes six permanent exhibitions. The museum’s Centre of Paleobiodiversity offers a particular area of focus: it collects important fossils from the younger and older Paleozoic. The town’s cultural offerings thus range from human history and regional ways of life to much older evidence of the history of the Earth.

Military history is represented by the Muzeum na demarkační linii. It is the largest non-state military museum in the Czech Republic. Rokycany also has an urban heritage zone. Notable historic sights include the Marian Column on Masaryk Square, a Baroque monument dating from 1725, and the Church of Panny Marie Sněžné, an important Gothic landmark in Rokycany.

Observatory and Kalvárie

The Rokycany Observatory is located on Osecký vrch on the northern outskirts of the town. Its telescope has a primary mirror diameter of 508 millimeters. At night, its instruments can be used to observe the Moon, planets, double stars, star clusters, galaxies and nebulae; during the day, the Sun is an observation target. The observatory thus complements the museums with an experience that turns the view from regional history toward the sky.

Kalvárie features a Way of the Cross with artistically designed stone stations and an artificial Holy Sepulchre. It also has a pseudo-Romanesque chapel in the form of a rotunda. Kalvárie therefore combines religious architecture with a path through the landscape, without requiring several separate topics to be considered.

Green Spaces, Paths and Geological History

In 2023, Husovy sady in Rokycany received a renewed network of paths, new footbridges, a viewpoint over the town and new benches. The Rokycanská stráň natural monument protects fossil sites from the Klabava and Šárka formations of the Czech Ordovician. Those interested in the geological side of the region will find a tangible connection here between the landscape and fossils.

The Kotel lookout tower south of Rokycany can be reached from the town via a blue-marked hiking trail. Mount Radyně is also located in the area around Rokycany. The Church of Svatý Martin is likewise nearby. These destinations add paths and excursion sites outside the town’s museums to your stay, without requiring any specific distance or walking time to be assumed.
