Terešov between Baroque, Remembrance and Forest

Terešov combines a striking Baroque castle with Jewish history, rural architecture and a forested setting. Terešov Castle dates from 1723. Its rectangular ground plan and mansard roof give the building a clearly recognizable historic character and make it an important cultural landmark of the village. The date and the distinctive architectural features give the castle a clear profile within the history of the village.

Jewish History and Baroque Art

The history of Terešov also includes the Jewish religious community, considered the first Jewish religious community in the Rokycany District. The Terešov synagogue was demolished after 1960. The Jewish cemetery has survived: it lies about 2 km southwest of Terešov on the road to Bílá Skála, and around 300 gravestones are still present there. Its location outside the village and its connection to the road to Bílá Skála add a distinct spatial reference to the historic village setting. The village is also home to a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, which recalls the Baroque past. Count Jan Křtitel Breda commissioned it; the statue is a dated High Baroque sculpture.

Historic Everyday Architecture in the Village

Alongside representative and religious monuments, Terešov also displays historic rural building forms. The Venkovský dům near building no. 4 is a single-storey residential building partially constructed using timber framing. It was originally part of a small farmstead. The building dates from no later than the 1830s and was later partially altered. As a result, it represents a different side of the village’s history from the castle: this building is shaped not by courtly representation but by former peasant living. Above the village, the Sýpka granary has also been preserved in its original form. The Neoclassical agricultural building is located immediately beside the castle grounds.

Forest Landscape and the V Horách Nature Reserve

The V Horách Nature Reserve near Terešov protects a species-rich mixed slope forest with numerous yew trees and abundant forest flora and fauna. Approximately 3,300 yew trees grow there; the oldest trees have stood for more than 500 years. From Terešov, the nature reserve is best reached via a dirt track. Along the way, there is a hillside chapel with beautiful views of the surrounding area. The Rokycany District also has marked hiking trails and well-maintained forest paths with rest areas. This brings together nature observation and peaceful stretches of trail: alongside the protected forest, the chapel and the viewpoint are also defining features of the route.

In the wider surrounding area, the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area extends as far as Zbiroh, which lies 6 km southwest of Terešov. Zbiroh’s location broadens the view from the village to a protected landscape in the nearby surroundings. When planning your stay, you can therefore distinguish between historical discoveries in the village and nature-related attractions in the surrounding area. A stay in Terešov is particularly appealing if you would like to combine castle architecture, Jewish remembrance, traditional buildings and protected forest landscapes.
