Butov by the Water and on Historic Trails

Butov is situated on the Hracholuská Reservoir and combines woodland scenery, water sports, cycling routes, and archaeological traces. This makes the town interesting for travelers who want to divide their stay between active hours by the water, a trip across the reservoir, and regional history. The Butovská Burial Mound dates back to the Middle Bronze Age, while its location on the shore contributes to its present-day recreational character.

Water and Boating on the Hracholuská Reservoir

At the Rekreační středisko BUTOV, located in an appealing woodland setting on the shore of the Hracholuská Reservoir, sailing and windsurfing are possible. Swimming is also possible there, and anglers can pursue their hobby. This means that different forms of recreation are available along the same shore: sporting activity, time in the water, and a quieter focus on fishing. A seasonal trip on the Plzeň excursion boat adds to these options. The boat operates on the Hracholusky–Butov route and stops at the main campsites. With a capacity of 150 people and a 20 km route, the trip offers a distinct perspective on the reservoir.

Two Cycling Connections to and Through Butov

Butov also has two different connections for cyclists. Cycling Route 2222 runs from Výrov via Nový Dvůr, Nynkov, Řebří, Ošelín, Svojšín, Pytlov, Záchlumí, Kšice, and Únehle to Butov. Cycling Route 2214, by contrast, passes by Butov. This distinction is useful when planning your tours: one route has Butov as its endpoint, while the other includes the town as a passage. This allows you to distinguish during your research between a ride to Butov and a route connected with the town.

Archaeological Traces Spanning a Long Period

The Butovská Burial Mound dates from the Middle Bronze Age, approximately the 16th to 14th centuries BC. In 1936, it was excavated by Otto Eichhorn, who worked in Stříbro as a professor and museum director. Another burial mound near Butov was excavated and reconstructed in 2013 by staff from the Západočeské muzeum v Plzni. The Petrský les burial-mound area is also part of the archaeological surroundings. It comprises 25 burial mounds on the eastern slope of Soudný, above the southern bank of the Malovický potok and north of the Mže River. The area around Butov therefore contains traces from different periods and locations: the Butovská Burial Mound with its long historical span, the burial mound examined in 2013, and the larger Petrský les area. For a stay that combines experiences in nature with history, this creates a change of scene between waterside landscapes, cycling paths, and archaeological themes.
