Suchá Lhota – Village Culture, Chapel and Cycling Tours

Suchá Lhota reflects the character of a cohesive Czech village: old farmsteads with gabled roofs shape the settlement, while the immediate surroundings consist primarily of agricultural land. Smaller wooded areas are located mainly in the valleys and along the edges of the cadastral area. Here, village architecture and an open, agriculturally shaped landscape meet directly.

Chapel, Monument and Local History

In the village centre, the Chapel of St. Anne stands beside a small ornamental garden, a monument to those who fell in the First World War, and a crucifix. The chapel was probably built in 1888. The monument standing beside it was made in 1920 from Hořice stone. It was created by the sculptor p. Vocha from Česká Třebová; it records the names and photographs of fallen and missing soldiers. The water tower built in 1929 is another prominent landmark of Suchá Lhota.

During a festive period, the Chapel of St. Anne is ceremonially decorated and opened to everyone who would like to reflect there in peace and experience a contemplative atmosphere. For a quieter cultural break, the municipal library has newly equipped rooms for reading, studying and relaxing. Its collection includes fiction, children's and young adult literature, as well as non-fiction.

Walking and Cycling around Suchá Lhota

A specific way to explore the surroundings on foot is the approximately 9 km hiking route “Suchá Lhota – Cerekvice”. It begins in Suchá Lhota and leads via Mošnovy and Bučina to Cerekvice. For cycling tours, the municipality organises its own rides, including outings in the surrounding area. The “Mlýn Horky – Růžový palouček – Nové Hrady” cycling circuit also passes through Suchá Lhota, among other places.

In the wider regional area, a cycling route connects attractive destinations with Litomyšl, Vysoké Mýto and Nové Hrady. One possible connection leads towards the Maštale Nature Reserve. Litomyšl can also be reached by bus. When planning a stay, this makes it possible to include both a hike starting from Suchá Lhota and trips by bicycle or excursions into the surrounding region.

Village Culture, Festivals and Regional Specialities

Local cultural life extends beyond the permanent structures. A village theatre ensemble from Suchá Lhota, revived in 2019, gave several repeat performances in picturesque municipalities in the region. The Víťa Fest is a public commemorative festival that was held for the second time in the cultural grounds of Suchá Lhota; bands performed throughout the day. On 7 June 2025, the Sucholhotecký blešák was also held in the municipality's cultural grounds from 2 p.m.

Local traditions and food are also part of the village character. Traditional Posvícení includes a shared lunch of duck, dumplings and sauerkraut. At one event, the local Sucholhotecké Topinky were also offered for tasting. The fire-water reservoir and its surroundings are used as a swimming area.
