Kunčina

Kunčina combines impressive religious buildings, Baroque monuments and an extensive network of educational trails. Churches and Baroque Heritage

The Church of St. George in Kunčina is a single-nave building with a Renaissance barrel vault, a wooden gallery and a Late Gothic portal in the tower. Inside, there is a late Renaissance relief of St. George dating from the end of the 16th century. The furnishings are complemented by a Rococo Stations of the Cross.

In front of the church stands a Baroque sculptural group commemorating the plague epidemic of 1715 and other disasters that affected Kunčina and Nová Ves. The complex comprises twelve statues of saints on a terrace enclosed by a balustrade, as well as four additional statues of saints on columns. The balustrade with its Baroque statues and the Calvary group are registered as immovable cultural monuments.

Another cultural and historical highlight can be found in Nová Ves. The Church of St. Roch dates from 1857; in front of it stands a stone Calvary group from 1862. The main altar contains an early Baroque painting of St. Roch and St. Sebastian from the second half of the 17th century. In Kunčina and Nová Ves, you can thus encounter various periods of religious art – from Late Gothic and Renaissance elements to Baroque works of art.

Educational Trails for Hikers and Cyclists

The Hřebečské důlní stezky form a 70-kilometre network of educational trails suitable for hikers and cyclists. Navigation along the network is supported by 22 educational stations and 40 signposts; there are also eight starting points and six rest areas. The trails lead to the Strážný vrch Lookout Tower, the tourist shelters on Mladějovský vrch and U vysílače, and several mines in the area.

The Strážný vrch Lookout Tower is most easily reached from the Kunčina, Nová Ves, točna bus stop via the Hřebečské důlní stezky, a distance of 2.5 km. The freely accessible tower is located in the woods. From there, views extend across the northern part of the Boskovická brázda, including Moravská Třebová and the Pastýřka Lookout Tower; the Zábřežská vrchovina, with the lookout tower on Lázka; and Podorlicko, with Lanškroun. Parts of the Orlické Mountains, including Suchý vrch and Buková hora, are also visible; in good visibility, the view reaches as far as Králický Sněžník.

Geology and Plant Life

The Pod skálou geological locality can be reached via a walkable tourist path from the road and lies more than 250 metres from the road. Natural populations of European yew grow among the beech stands. Exposed rock outcrops are also home to a species-rich flora including rare thermophilic plants. This site adds a natural-history dimension to the cultural attractions, clearly distinguishing it from the churches and sculptures in the town.
