Discover Semín

Semín combines Baroque architectural history, historic technology and distinctive landscape features. This creates a destination where very different interests can be tied to specific locations: the small chateau, the bell tower, the western edge of the village and the Semín sand drift. Small Chateau, Church and Bell Tower

The history of the Semín small chateau is particularly vivid. In 1691, a brewery was added to the original building. At the same time, the building was remodelled and extended in the Baroque style. The chateau’s dominant building is also the birthplace of the architect Josef Gočár, who was born on 13 March 1880. Semín is therefore home not only to a historic building, but also to a connection with a specific figure from architectural history.

Another small but precisely datable testimony to the village’s history is the bell tower. It contains two historic bells, cast in 1542 and 1606. These two dates make the bell tower a place where the village’s long development can be read directly from preserved objects. The church in Semín was remodelled in the Baroque style in the second half of the 17th century and has retained this appearance to the present day. Together with the small chateau, it forms a cultural focal point that can also be an interesting part of travel planning for groups of different ages.

Historic Technology at the Former Chateau Brewery Site

A Hvozdový valach from the first half of the 19th century has been preserved at the former chateau brewery site. It is one of the oldest known examples of its kind in the Czech Republic. Its age is not its only remarkable feature: the Hvozdový valach operates entirely without electrical energy and has been preserved complete with its calorifiers and warm-air ducts. For those interested in technology, Semín thus offers an unusual detail that clearly differs from the village’s Baroque architectural heritage and landscape features.

Aqueduct at the Western Edge of the Village

The Semín Aqueduct lies at the western edge of Semín. It is a crossing at different elevations between the Opatovice Canal and the Sopřečský Stream. The route to the Semín Aqueduct is signposted near the main road.

The Opatovice Canal is also an impressive technical monument connected with Semín.

Sandy Areas and Rare Plant Life

The Semín sand drift reveals another side of Semín. It features open grasslands of continental dunes with hair grass and bent grass. It is also home to an extremely rare occurrence in the Czech Republic as a whole of the sand milk-vetch (Astragalus arenarius). For travellers interested in natural history, this is therefore not merely an open landscape, but an area with a rare plant species and a distinctive form of vegetation.
