Zaječice – Cultural Traces, Water and Paths

Zaječice is a destination for anyone who wants to combine historical traces, unusual discoveries and paths through a varied landscape. Zaječice lies in the foothills of the Železné hory. The Ležák stream flows through the village. Marked routes run through Zaječice, offering excursions that combine cultural history and nature observation.

History that remains visible in the village

At the western gable of Building No. 64 in Zaječice, remnants of the late Gothic window surrounds of the former fortress have been preserved. The fortress in House No. 64 in Zaječice is also registered as an immovable cultural monument. This means that history can be encountered not only in a collection, but at a specific building in the village. A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk in Zaječice is likewise registered as an immovable cultural monument. The two monuments represent different focal points: the fortress refers to a specific building with preserved late Gothic details, while the statue is an independent religious monument in the village. The fortress, window surrounds and statue are located in Zaječice itself. The prehistoric urn from Zaječice has been dated to the beginning of the Common Era; its copy is located in the town museum in Chrast near Chrudim. The large molar of a herbivore was discovered in the Vinice district and is kept in the museum in Chrast. The urn therefore belongs to a considerably earlier period than the late Gothic architectural remains on Building No. 64. The fortress and statue are in Zaječice; the urn copy and the molar, by contrast, are located in Chrast near Chrudim.

Ležák, Ponds and the Zaječický Forest

There are two small ponds along the course of the Ležák in the southern part of the village. The Zaječický Forest also extends south of Zaječice in the surrounding area. The Zaječický Forest complements this waterscape with a nearby wooded area. Anyone who wants to experience the landscape not merely as a backdrop but as a sequence of concrete elements will find a stream, ponds and forest here in a clear spatial relationship. Another distinctive feature is found in the Studená Voda–Bítovánky area: impressions of shells of marine animals can be found in a field by the forest. The shell impressions complement the waterscape and forest landscape with a find that points to a different geological past.

Marked routes for different day plans

A signposted local cycling route runs through Zaječice. A blue-marked hiking trail also begins at the local Zaječice railway station. From there, it first leads via Žumberk, then past the Ležáky memorial site and finally to Hlinsko. The two marked routes differ in their course: the cycling route is locally signposted, while the hiking trail leads from the station via Žumberk and Ležáky to Hlinsko. Zaječice railway station is integrated into an integrated transport system.
