Prosetín: Granite, History and Regional Discoveries

Prosetín combines a multilayered local history with unusually vivid geology. If you are looking for a place in the Czech Republic with historical traces, hilly landscapes and regional discoveries, you will encounter very different themes here within a compact area: the first written mention dating from 1445, granite and former quarries, an educational trail covering the events of Ležáky, and a private goat farm with its own products.

History between the Town Centre and Ležáky

The first written mention of Prosetín dates from 1445. At that time, the locality essentially comprised the two settlements of Prasetín and Malý Prasetín. In the town centre, next to a chapel on the road between Prosetín and Skuteč, there is an information board. The chapel itself is considered a prominent landmark of Prosetín: its exterior is completely new, while the interior furnishings are old. A large erratic boulder in the town centre also serves as a memorial to those who fell.

Another historical connection leads northwest beyond the municipality. The educational trail “Traces of the Ležáky Tragedy” is located in the immediate vicinity of Prosetín. It follows the traces of the resistance and the tragic events in Ležáky during the Second World War. The educational trail was opened to the public in 2010, is 13 kilometres long and comprises eight stations. One distinction is important for orientation: there are no marked hiking trails running through the municipality of Prosetín, while this nearby trail is designed as a clearly described historical visitor attraction with its own length and designated stations.

Granite Landscape in the National Geopark

The geosite near Prosetín is located in the eastern part of the Železné hory National Geopark. The landscape is hilly and characterised by rounded elevations. Its geological foundation consists of rocks from the Železné hory plutonic complex. Rock exposed at the geosite is generally referred to as “Skuteč granite”.

Numerous abandoned and flooded quarries around Prosetín form a natural part of the landscape. Holec Quarry was one of the first granite quarries opened in the Železné hory Mountains. The connection with transport history is also close: the construction of the Pardubice–Německý Brod railway line paved the way for the local granite industry in Prosetín.

The geology is particularly concentrated at the open-pit quarry at the Prosetín site. It provides insight into the core of the igneous body of the Nasavrky Pluton. There is also a striking mineralogical detail: pyrite, or iron sulfide, forms radiating aggregates there on tension fractures, reminiscent of depictions of the sun. The landscape can therefore be read not only through its hilly surroundings, but also through its rocks, mining history and minerals.

Regional Products on the Outskirts

There is a private goat farm on the outskirts of Prosetín. It is open to tourists and anyone interested in goat products, and produces cheese, yoghurt and ice cream from goat’s milk. This adds a specific regional connection to the town’s historical and geological themes.
