Heřmanův Městec lies at the northern foothills of the Železné hory and combines a remarkable collection of historic monuments with trails, landscapes and unusual stories about the region’s geological history. Cultural monuments with a character of their own

The urban heritage conservation zone of Heřmanův Městec was designated in 1990. It includes the chateau park, which is connected to the city’s most important listed building. The Church of St. Bartholomew is a particularly striking religious building. It was built between 1756 and 1761 in the pure Baroque style and is considered a cultural monument of significance beyond the region.

The synagogue is also one of the defining historic sites. It was completely reconstructed between 1997 and 2001 and ceremonially reopened on 25 November 2001. Gallery Cyrany has assembled a collection of works by East Bohemian painters and sculptors of the 20th century. Gallery Cyrany has served as a permanent gallery since 2002.

Another ensemble is the old cemetery complex near the Church of the Annunciation. It includes a church dating from the second half of the 16th century, listed gravestones, a Baroque bell tower and an enclosing wall. In Heřmanův Městec, you will therefore encounter various historical layers that are not limited to a single building.

Educational trail, paths and Bažantnice

For an active exploration of the area, the “Město u dvou moří” educational trail is a good choice. It has six stops and provides information about two prehistoric seas that once surrounded the area of today’s Heřmanův Městec. The historical account remains clearly focused on geological history while adding an unusual perspective to a visit to the town today.

Konopáč is a hub for marked hiking and cycling trails. If you do not want to focus your stay exclusively on cultural monuments, it offers another way to explore the surrounding area. The landscape also includes Bažantnice. It lies on the eastern edge of the built-up area of Heřmanův Městec, covers approximately 22.2 hectares and is part of the Natura 2000 network. It serves as a recreational area for the town’s residents.
