Pivín Between Pilgrimage, Geology and Cycling

Pivín combines a historic pilgrimage tradition, geological features and cycling. St. George's Church stands in the village centre; an educational trail and a signposted cycling route also lead into the Skalka–písky area. The educational trail complements the sacred history with landscape and regional themes, while the cycling route provides an active connection with the Skalka–písky area.

St. George and the Pivín Pilgrimage

The single-nave Baroque Church of St. George stands in the centre of Pivín. It is an immovable cultural monument and also a Marian pilgrimage site. Fragmentarily preserved remains of its former surrounding wall add to the building's historic appearance. The high altar features an altarpiece of Saint George created by the prominent Olomouc painter Josef Handke. The Marian image of Pivín was donated to the church on 8 October 1745 and placed above the tabernacle in 1753.

Historically, processions to Our Lady of Pivín took place from spring through autumn. 8 September became established as the most important and later the only Pivín pilgrimage. The church thus represents both Baroque sacred architecture and a pilgrimage tradition that developed over an extended period.

Skalka–písky and the Educational Trail

The Skalka–písky locality displays an unusual sequence of Lower Badenian sediments. It is a geotourism attraction and an excursion site. At the same time, it is a former sandstone quarry in Lower Badenian sediments. The geological locality also lies within the cadastral area of Pivín and can be reached from the road via an accessible tourist path.

The Pivín–Skalka Educational Trail was ceremonially opened in August 2019 and comprises eight information panels about the history of the municipalities, the surrounding nature and the spa towns. It therefore combines geological topics with regional history and knowledge of the landscape.

Cycling Route No. 5013

For cyclists, signposted Cycling Route No. 5013 leads from the direction of Skalka to Pivín. It is classified as moderately difficult, runs along Class II and Class III roads and has an asphalt surface. The asphalt surface, the Class II roads and the moderate difficulty rating give you specific points of reference when weighing surface, road classes and difficulty against one another for your cycling trip. The signposting makes it easier to identify the route while en route.

Annual Traditions

Traditions in Pivín include Ostatky, featuring a masked procession through the village and the burial of the double bass. Other regular events are the burning of witches in April, the erection and felling of the maypole in May, and the traditional Domlácená in August. Alongside the church, pilgrimage and educational trail, these traditions give the village a distinctive cultural character.
