Cycling along the Romže, paths by a reservoir, a Baroque castle and wetlands: Prostějov District brings together a range of travel interests. The places and landscapes below offer specific ideas, without every experience revolving around the same holiday theme.

Cycling along the Romže: route and surface

The Romže Cycle Path connects Konice and Prostějov and runs along the Romže River. It is considered easy to ride and is mostly flat. However, the surface changes along some sections: most parts are paved and run away from roads. Between Ptenský Dvorek and Bělecký mlýn, there is a gravel section; from Bělecký mlýn, the route continues along a forest path. This information can help you assess the route and its different surfaces. As path conditions can change, check them again before setting off.

The wider Prostějovsko travel region also features Route No. 5, the Amber Cycle Path (Jantarová cyklostezka), which is described as a route through the region. The names refer to two different cycling routes and should not be confused. The Romže route specifically connects Konice and Prostějov; the Amber Cycle Path provides regional context. This offers two ways to think about cycling in the district: a named connection and the wider landscape.

Plumlov Reservoir: circular route and summer programme

A circular path around Plumlov Reservoir is used by both pedestrians and cyclists. If you would like to combine a stay by the water with some activity, this is a clear option: the path circles the reservoir, while a summer cinema operates at the dam during the school summer holidays. There is a mini-golf course below the dam. The cinema is explicitly tied to the school summer holidays, so plan a visit accordingly. The circular path, cinema and mini-golf offer different experiences, none of which replaces the character of the others.

Hrdibořické Ponds: natural monument and wetland life

The Hrdibořické Ponds are among the five national natural monuments listed for the Prostějovsko region. Birds found at the ponds include little bitterns, garganeys, water rails, great reed warblers, great crested grebes, Eurasian coots, mute swans and kingfishers. Amphibians include frogs and tree frogs. Which animals you may see can vary by season and year. This nature experience is therefore not centred on a fixed programme of events, but on the changing range of species found in the wetland.

The wider Prostějovsko region is also shaped by bodies of water and rare wetlands near Hrdibořice. The contrast between the Drahanská vrchovina highlands and the broad Haná plain provides another landscape setting for the region. This regional perspective complements the specific ponds, but is not simply another name for Prostějov District.

Castle and regional history in Konice

The Baroque castle in Konice houses an exhibition featuring a collection of axes listed in the Guinness Book of Records, as well as an exhibition about crafts that were once practised in the Konice area. An unusual collection and the history of regional work are presented side by side. The exhibitions offer a cultural counterpoint to the district’s cycling and nature themes. As no current opening information is provided, check before visiting.

Prostějovsko as a wider travel horizon

Beyond the district, Prostějovsko tells the story of traditions that have been part of the region’s social life for generations: local hody celebrations, bear processions, the symbolic funeral of the double bass, the Easter pomlázka whipping tradition and Christmas customs. This does not mean that every one of these customs is documented in every place in the district; they belong to the wider regional context. The historic Amber Road also brings this broader setting to life. It ran through Prostějovsko, stretching from the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean, and its most important traded commodity was amber. It was one of Europe’s most significant trade routes, but it was a historic trade connection, not a modern cycling route.

These options offer different priorities to consider when planning your trip: the connection between Konice and Prostějov on the Romže route, the circular path and seasonal offerings at Plumlov Reservoir, the wetlands near Hrdibořice or the history of Konice.
