Budětsko: Chapels, Crosses and Places of Remembrance
Accommodation in Budětsko
Budětsko tells its local history through tangible landmarks: chapels, crosses and monuments commemorate church services, personal experiences and the fallen. The recorded dates span from the early 18th century to the 20th century. Those interested in sacred architecture and local remembrance will find a range of themes here—from a memorial bell to colourful paintings in the Pilávka Valley.
Chapels and Church Services
The Chapel of St Anne was built between 1900 and 1902 and consecrated on 14 July 1903. Church services are still held there four times a year, and May devotions are also held in May. A description from 2020 notes that it is accessible during services. Plan your visit around the current liturgical calendar.
The Chapel of the Mother of God was built in 1823 on the main road from Konice to Olomouc. It provides an older historical reference among Budětsko’s sacred buildings. Its location along this road also distinguishes it from the chapels for which no such connection to a road is mentioned.
Crosses with Personal Stories
The Cross beyond the Village was originally a wooden cross dating from the early 18th century. In 1844, it was replaced by a stone cross. Pavlův kříž is also made of stone: it stands at the crossroads of the road from Konice to Olomouc and the turnoff to Ochoz. It was erected in 1876 in gratitude that the builder’s daughter remained in good health.
Another personal story is associated with the Cross of St Barbara. Štěpán Grulich had the cross erected in 1928 after surviving an accident at this spot. Together, the two stories show how varied the reasons for creating such memorials were: Pavlův kříž commemorates the daughter’s good health, while the Cross of St Barbara marks surviving an accident.
Memorials and Historical Details
Budětsko’s bell tower houses a historic memorial bell dating from 1765 and weighing 65 kilograms. The monument in Slavíkov commemorates local soldiers who fell in the First World War; their names, birth and death dates, and portraits have been preserved. A war memorial to the fallen residents was also erected in Budětsko in 1923. The names, life dates and portraits give the monument in Slavíkov a particularly personal touch, while the monument in Budětsko stands as a separate memorial to the fallen residents.
Traces in the Pilávka Valley
Outside the village, in the Pilávka Valley, are the remains of a mill and a sawmill, as well as a log forester’s lodge. The lodge is decorated with colourful paintings: one depicts the funeral procession at a forester’s burial, while another shows a hero slaying a dragon. In this way, the remains of buildings and the painted scenes add another facet of local history to the stories of the chapels, crosses and memorials.
For planning your trip, Budětsko’s cultural focus is easy to define: the documented examples lead to sacred buildings, personal stories and remembrance of the fallen. The dates help place the various landmarks in time; their individual stories distinguish them from one another without merging them into a single narrative.
