Čehovice: Village History, River and Paths

Čehovice is a destination where village history, a river and paths for walking and cycling come together. The Church of Saint Procopius is particularly prominent. There is also a chapel associated with the former settlement, archaeological finds and an educational trail with six information boards. This makes it possible to explore the village through several themes, without limiting its history to a single building.

The Church of Saint Procopius

The present single-nave, oriented Baroque church was built in 1788–1789; in 1789, it was constructed using material from the old church. In Čehovice, it is considered the centrepiece of the village square and the oldest monument in the municipality. The church grounds include a well-maintained park with mature trees. The church thus combines architectural history, the centre of the village and a distinctive green space.

Chapels and the History of the Settlement

On Stráž Hill, the small Chapel of Saint Procopius bears the year 1634. It commemorates the original location of Čehovice. After the presumed war-related destruction, the village was rebuilt about 1 km lower down, near the Vřesůvka River. The area in front of the chapel is occasionally used for outdoor weddings. The Vřesůvka stream also flows along the edge of Čehovice.

Archaeological Traces in the Countryside

The countryside around Čehovice also preserves important clues to the past. In “Poblatí”, a gold hoard from the Middle Danube Tumulus Culture was discovered in 1947. It consisted of several gold wires and decorated gold foils. In “Jelítka”, extensive ceramic remains from the same period came to light during deep ploughing in 1920. Both sites broaden the view of the village’s history beyond its visible sacred buildings.

Educational Trail and Cycle Connections

The Čehovice educational trail forms a loop suitable for walking and cycling. Six information boards cover the wetland biocorridor, local history and the municipality’s cultural monuments. Those wishing to explore these topics together will find nature, history and culture presented along a single loop. The 1.734 km section of the cycle path from Bedihošť to Čehovice runs along the railway line.

Road II/367 is also important for orientation within the regional transport network. It runs through Bedihošť, Čehovice and Čelčice and is the only direct connection between these municipalities and Prostějov. The road is also used by cyclists. A Hodová Mass is usually celebrated in the Church of Saint Procopius on the Sunday closest to the feast day of Saint Procopius on 4 July.
