Jiříkov – Castle, Nature Park and Cultural Discoveries

Jiříkov combines the landscape of Sovinecko Nature Park with an unusually diverse cultural history. Between the castle, churches, galleries, film history and marked trails, it offers a destination that allows for a variety of holiday experiences: you can explore regional history, discover cultural highlights or explore the surrounding area on foot and by bicycle.

Nature Park, Trails and Getting There

Jiříkov is located in the Sovinecko Nature Park. The surrounding area can be reached via numerous marked hiking and cycling trails. This makes it possible to experience the landscape actively, without focusing your stay exclusively on individual sights. Another travel option is bus route 912, which runs to Jiříkov from the direction of Rýmařov and Šternberk.

The route to Sovinec Castle has also been better organized for visitors: Jiříkov has completed a safe pedestrian connection between a parking area and Sovinec Castle. The way you wish to spend your day can therefore play a role in choosing your accommodation. Those who mainly want to experience culture will plan differently from guests who want to use the marked hiking and cycling trails in the surrounding area.

Sovinec Castle and Living Culture

Sovinec Castle was built at the end of the 13th century and has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 1958. Its significance, however, extends beyond its architectural history: from April to October, the castle hosts cultural events and invites visitors to various events every year. In this way, the historic character of the site is combined with a changing cultural program.

A special connection to more recent cultural history comes through Bohdan Sláma’s film “Divoké včely”. Jiříkov and its inhabitants play a leading role in it. At Pradědova Gallery, a local woodcarver also exhibits carved sculptures. The gallery is also home to the statue of the ruler of the Jeseníky Mountains, the forefather Praděd. It is 10.4 meters high and weighs 15 tons – a detail that adds a particularly impressive dimension to a visit to the gallery.

Churches, Galleries and Discoveries for Different Age Groups

The cultural diversity includes several very different places. The former chapel in Křížov now serves as a gallery and souvenir shop under the name “Galerie v Kapli sv. Františka”. The historicist church in Kněžpole was built in 1908–1909. Advent concerts are held in the church in Jiříkov, adding a seasonal musical experience to the cultural side of the town.

Pradědova Gallery also includes an 8-hectare fallow deer farm, which is particularly suitable for children. In addition to the exhibited wooden sculptures and the 10.4-meter-high statue, this site therefore offers its own point of interest for families with different interests. At the same time, it is worth taking a close look at the differences between the individual cultural sites: the church in Těchanov has not been functional for a longer period and is currently being damaged by moisture. It should therefore not be equated with a regularly accessible church or an event venue.

For active days, the marked hiking and cycling trails and Sovinecko Nature Park take center stage; for cultural excursions, Sovinec Castle, Pradědova Gallery, the churches and the gallery in the former chapel offer different focal points.
