Discover Úvalno

Úvalno combines a distinctive lookout tower, a natural swimming biotope and unusually tangible evidence of its local history. The Hans Kudlich Lookout Tower on Strážiště near Úvalno was built as a memorial to Hans Kudlich. The cultural offerings are complemented by a retro museum, a Gothic church, the birthplace of Hans Kudlich and preserved parts of a mill. Wet meadows and a natural watercourse are also among Úvalno’s natural features. This allows you to experience the different sides of a place.

The Hans Kudlich Lookout Tower

The Hans Kudlich Lookout Tower was built according to the design of the architect Oskar von Felgel and constructed as a memorial to Hans Kudlich. Standing 21.5 metres tall, it opened on 21 September 1913. This precise date and its connection with Hans Kudlich give the structure a distinct historical character. Group visits to the lookout tower can be arranged outside opening hours at least one day in advance.

Water and Wet Landscapes

Plovárna Na Výsluní is located below the Hans Kudlich Lookout Tower in Úvalno. The natural swimming biotope was created on the site of the former outdoor swimming pool and comprises a swimming area, a non-swimmer area and a paddling pool. Plovárna also has a water slide. Visitors will find sanitary facilities, outdoor showers and changing rooms on site.

A different landscape impression awaits you at Úvalenská louka. It consists of wet meadows with a marshy or bog-like character. In Úvalno, the Opava is described as a preserved natural watercourse with riparian vegetation and is of supraregional ornithological and zoological importance. Úvalenská louka and the Opava thus represent two distinct natural aspects of Úvalno: wet meadows and a natural river course with valuable riparian vegetation.

Museum, Church and Local History

The former vicarage was converted into the retro museum. There you can see living spaces with a kitchen, a bathroom, a children’s room with toys from the 1950s and a formal living room.

The Church of St Nicholas in Úvalno is a masonry, longitudinally rectangular, single-nave Gothic church dating from the second half of the 14th century. It was remodelled in the Baroque style after 1762. Another memorial site is the birthplace of Hans Kudlich in Úvalno, dedicated to an important historical figure. The Rychta also preserves structural components and parts of the furnishings of a mill.

Railway Station, Hytlák and the Route Through Silesia

At the municipal railway station in Úvalno stands a carriage called Hytlák. It has a stove, a small kitchen and a type of sanitary area. The renovated former station building dates from 1875 and is one of the few half-timbered buildings in the region. Today it operates as an information centre with sanitary facilities and a café.

For active exploration, the Via Czechia – Stezka Slezskem itinerary includes a route that continues from Úvalno railway station along a signposted cycle route. The “Úvalno–Rychta” section is also part of it. Úvalno is associated with a museum, a restaurant, groceries, and bus and train connections. The itinerary also lists Horní Benešov, Mezina, Horní Životice, Třemešná, Rymarov, Mala Moravka, Zator and Tvrdkov.
