Veselá combines a distinctive connection to the landscape with a multifaceted local history. The Veselka stream flows through the municipality, historic settlements tell of earlier ways of life, and buildings such as the Masaryk School reflect different periods in the area’s development. For families who enjoy combining nature observation, culture, and local traditions on holiday, Veselá therefore offers several starting points for planning their own trip.

Landscape along the Veselka stream

The Veselka stream rises in Černá rokle below Skuhrov and flows into the Libuňka near Ktová. Its course through Veselá gives the municipality a distinctive landscape character. At the same time, the municipality of Veselá lies within the Český ráj Protected Landscape Area.

Local history with unusual details

Veselá was first mentioned in 1616 in the memorial book of the town of Rovensko and historically belonged to the Hruboskalské estate. The associated settlements also bring the past to life: Bítouchov was founded in 1872 with eight cottages and has belonged to the municipality of Veselá since 1881. Vranovsko was originally called Drašnov and received its current name after the cottager Vrána, who ran a business there.

Further insights are provided by Žďár and Kotelsko. The settlement of Žďár arose in the 17th century and comprised three agricultural holdings in 1713. Kotelsko was established in 1693 after the Kotelský estate was dissolved and fourteen cottages were built there. Details like these make the historical development tangible not only through dates, but also through settlement patterns and earlier economic practices.

Culture, architecture, and memory

In the Kotelsko archaeological find area, a presumed fortress is believed to have stood at the location known today only as “Na hrádku.” The settlement of Kotelisko, which belongs to the municipality of Veselá, is also home to a Baroque Calvary representation dating from 1776. The Masaryk School in Veselá was built in 1938–1939 in the Functionalist style. During the Protectorate, the school’s headteacher, Karel Hlaváček, hid Vladimír Krajina, the leader of the ÚVOD resistance group, there. Veselá’s cultural profile therefore encompasses sacred and archaeological subjects as well as architecture and the history of remembrance.

Traditions and practical information

Traditional customs are part of local event life: the women of Veselá organize a Masopust masked procession and the “Babí hop” masked ball. If you would particularly like to focus your trip on regional culture, you can take these traditions into account when planning further. For arrival by public transport, the “Veselá, na návsi” bus stop is served by routes 542, 550, and 553. This information can be useful when choosing a hotel or other accommodation if you would like to organize your trip without your own car.

Veselá is therefore suitable as a starting point for a trip centered not on a single major landmark, but on the interplay of landscape, settlement history, architecture, and traditional customs. When choosing accommodation, compare which experiences should be the focus for your family: historical discoveries, regional traditions, or the landscape of Český ráj. For further orientation, you can also explore Chutnovka, Rakousy, Kacanovy, Slana, Dolni Stepanice, Holenice, Ktová and Semily.
