A distinctive gateway to the region’s past is the Nová přádelna building. It is part of an extensive complex dating back to 1861, which was once one of the most important centres of the textile industry in the Podkrkonoší region. At FABRIKA 1861, guided tours introduce visitors to the industrial architecture of the 19th and 20th centuries, architectural and technical features, and the history of the textile industry. Regular exhibitions are also held there.

The “Léčitelé Pojizeří a Podkrkonoší” exhibition also focuses on an unusual subject. It features more than 30 figures from an area extending from Liberec to Trutnov and south to Jičín. Visitors can also see a detailed reconstruction of the treatment room of the Semily healer Květoslava Patočková, as well as an authentic recording of her voice. This offers a concrete insight into regional traditions and individual life stories, rather than presenting history solely through dates.

Tours, Events and Architecture

The rooms of FABRIKA 1861 are open to visitors during public events or as part of private tours. The guided tours also include the rooms of the Ludmila Clock Tower in the FABRIKA 1861 complex. When choosing when to travel, it is also worth noting that FABRIKA 1861 hosts concerts, festivals, parties and other events for the general public.

Another architectural detail can be found inside Sbor Dr. Karla Farského. Wooden carvings by Vladimír Komárek (1928–2002), titled “Mistr Jan Hus na kazatelně” and “Karel Farský v zamyšlení nad písmem svatým,” dating from 1958, hang there. The building itself has an expressive design, with a dynamic arrangement of its volumes and Gothic reminiscences in the form of a pointed arch. Semily therefore offers several distinct themes even for a shorter cultural walk.

Along the Riegrova Trail through the Jizera Landscape

The Riegrova Trail starts in Semily and runs for 5 km via Bítouchov, the Jizera Valley and Podspálov. It passes through the attractive landscape of the Galerie Natural Monument and the Údolí Jizery a Bítouchova Nature Reserve. A green route called “Zelená šlápota” leads past the open-air exhibition “Cesta do pravěku.”

One of the notable features of the Riegrova Trail is a 77-metre-long suspended gallery offering views of the Jizera.
