Holenice is located in the Český ráj area, and the municipality’s territory belongs to the UNESCO Český ráj Geopark. Anyone wishing to combine observing nature with learning about local history during their stay will find two particularly different points of interest in Holenice: the Holenický lom quarry on the Boučnice stream and the history of the former hunting lodge.

Forest, valley, and the Holenice Quarry

The Holenický lom quarry lies on the northern edge of the municipality of Holenice, in a forest. Its location is precisely described: it is situated in a sharp bend in the road from Veselá, on the right bank of the Boučnice stream. The site is of national geological and paleontological importance. This makes it a destination in its own right for anyone who wants to do more than simply admire the landscape in Český ráj and also appreciate its geological past.

Holenice itself lies in a picturesque valley on the Boučnice stream between Lomnice nad Popelkou, Rovensko pod Troskami, and Libuň. The road from Veselá offers a broad view of Holenice and the houses along the stream. Two contrasting landscape impressions can therefore be found here: the forest setting of the Holenický lom quarry and the more open view across the valley, with its buildings along the water.

The Hunting Lodge and the History of Holenice

A second point of interest is the former hunting lodge. A manor farm originally stood at this location; a wooden hunting lodge was later built there. The present masonry hunting lodge was commissioned by Count Aehrenthal in 1870 at a cost of 6,000 gulden. It is considered the oldest building in Holenice and formerly belonged to the Hrubá Skála estate. This sequence of events makes the site more than just a single historic building: the farm, the wooden hunting lodge, and the later masonry structure are all part of its documented development.

The local economic history also extends beyond the building itself. Grinding garnets at home was once one of the most important sources of income for the inhabitants of Holenice. In 1628, the village passed to Albrecht von Wallenstein, who incorporated it into the Hruboskalsko estate. The former hunting lodge’s game reserve once included 569 hectares of spruce forest. Those interested in the history of the landscape can therefore bring together local history, estate administration, crafts, and former forest use within a limited area.

Holenice can be reached by public transport via the Jivany railway stop. In addition, IDOL bus route 553 connects Rovensko pod Troskami and Lomnice nad Popelkou via Holenice. The route serves the stops Holenice, Staré Holenice, and Holenice lom.
