Hruba Skala: Rock Town, Castle and Sandstone Landscape

Hruba Skala combines impressive sandstone formations with a history of castles and châteaux dating back to the Middle Ages. Rock Landscape and Trails

The Hruboskalsko Nature Reserve is known among climbers as “Skalák,” lies within the Český ráj Protected Landscape Area and was designated a nature reserve in 1998. The rock town is characterized by numerous caves, rock tunnels and rock gates, as well as other small-scale formations of the sandstone region. These terms do not describe an ordinary woodland landscape, but an environment in which the trail is repeatedly shaped by striking rock formations.

An important connection for hikers is the ridge trail through the Hruboskalsko rock town. It follows a section of the Golden Trail in the Bohemian Paradise. Historically, Hruboskalsko was also one of the most frequently used climbing areas in Bohemia. Castle and Historical Traces

Hrubá Skála Castle was built in the mid-14th century by Hynek z Valdštejna. At the end of the 16th century, it was remodeled into a Renaissance château. This chronology makes the complex interesting even if you are interested not only in architecture, but also in how a place developed over several centuries.

Today, Hrubá Skála Castle serves as a hotel and is only partially accessible. The courtyard and observation tower are open to visitors. The Church of Saint Joseph stands by the bridge in the square in front of the castle. It was built in 1812 in a simple Neoclassical style.

Among the more unusual cultural and historical details is Adamovo lože (Jeskyně milenců). It contains rock reliefs depicting three Adams: the biblical Adam, the progenitor of the family line and Adam František. However, the reliefs are not very clearly visible today. This limitation is part of the way the site should be understood and prevents you from expecting a completely preserved depiction there.
