Provodín and the Seven Peaks of Provodínské kameny

Provodín lies at the southwestern foot of Provodínské kameny, making it a suitable starting point for a trip in which landscape, hiking and local history are closely connected. The Provodínské kameny natural monument is particularly characteristic: it protects a basalt rock exposed by erosion that forms a distinctive landmark in the landscape.

Seven Peaks, Basalt and Phonolite

Provodínské kameny are a group of seven peaks consisting of basalt and phonolite. The highest peak is Lysá skála at 419 m. From its summit, there are views of the surrounding landscape. The natural monument area has been under special protection since 4 July 1956. As a result, this destination combines a clearly recognizable geological character with a long history of protection.

Hiking around Lysá skála

A green route leads from Provodín towards Horní Provodín and then to a turnoff directly to Lysá skála. Provodín as a Starting Point

Provodín is the best starting point for visiting Provodínské kameny and can be reached by car, bus and train. This information is particularly relevant when choosing accommodation if the rock group is to be the focus of the stay. The town’s railway history includes the fact that the Bakov nad Jizerou–Česká Lípa railway line was put into operation in 1867. At that time, Jestřebí railway station was established in Provodín. The historical railway name is therefore a separate part of the town’s history and should not be equated with a statement about present-day facilities. The town’s earlier development also goes back a long way: the first written mention of Provodín dates from 1376. The company Engel and Co. added another historical aspect, mining glass sand in Provodín as late as the 1930s. Thus, alongside the peaks and the protected basalt rock, written records, railway history and industrial use represent different ways of approaching the town.
