Holany Between Water Landscapes and Culture

Holany lies on the shore of Holanský rybník, which is part of the Holanské rybníky complex. As a result, the town combines a distinctive water landscape with a remarkable density of historical traces. The southern edge of the Kokořínsko Protected Landscape Area borders Holany, adding a protected natural area to the townscape. Here, water surfaces, historic buildings, and protected nature are all situated within a manageable geographical area.

The Holanské rybníky ponds near Holany comprise 23 medieval bodies of water and are used for recreation. A particularly scenic destination is Milčanský rybník: it covers 29 hectares and is also used for recreation. A small campsite is located on its shore. The island in Milčanský rybník also contains a protected breeding site for waterfowl. The landscape can therefore be viewed here not only as a body of water, but also as a habitat. The combination of several ponds, the large Milčanský rybník, and the island gives the water complex a variety of natural and historical points of reference.

Routes for Cyclists and Hikers

For planning an active day, there is a clearly described cycling route: Cycle Routes 3086 and 211 lead from Holany to Milčanský rybník. Those who would like to explore the surroundings on foot can choose between two marked routes of different lengths. A blue-marked hiking trail from Holany to Dubá is 22 km long. A green-marked hiking trail from Holany to Česká Lípa measures 9 km. The different distances help you distinguish between longer and shorter hiking days when planning your stay and excursions. This gives you both a longer connection and a shorter route to choose from when exploring the area, without both routes requiring the same amount of time in your day.

Wooden Architecture and Medieval Castle Remains

Several notable wooden folk buildings have been preserved in Holany, including houses No. 3, 33, and 77. The Holany log houses date from the 18th and 19th centuries and give the town a historical architectural dimension distinct from the surrounding ponds. The specific house numbers make the preserved examples easy to identify in the townscape. Another cultural monument is the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene in Holany, which is a protected cultural monument under heritage protection.

Vítkovec also broadens the range of historical destinations. The site was built as a late Gothic castle in 1455. What remains are seven-metre-high corner walls, sections of the palace walls, and ramparts. Thus, the historical traces include not only rural wooden architecture but also medieval fortification remains. Sádky is an important technical monument with four rectangular ponds dating from the 16th century. The ponds connect the history of technology with the abundance of water that characterizes the area around Holany.
