Marienbad: Spa Culture, Nature and Discoveries

Marienbad between Spa Culture and Forests

Marienbad (Mariánské Lázně) combines a long-established spa tradition with springs, forests and a variety of discoveries. The town is one of the eleven European spa towns that make up the serial UNESCO World Heritage Site “The Great Spa Towns of Europe”. Particularly striking is the Hlavní lázeňská kolonáda (Maxim Gorky Colonnade). It is a landmark of Mariánské Lázně and a historic monument to Czech spa culture. It was built in 1888–1889 in the Neo-Baroque style as a cast-iron structure. For orientation on site, it is also worth noting that the colonnade is step-free and has public toilets, including an accessible toilet.

Mineral Springs and Trails through the Spa Forests

More than 100 mineral springs rise in the vicinity of Mariánské Lázně, with around 40 in the town itself. You can explore these springs on regular guided tours with commentary organized by the town. The Příroda parků nature trail offers a more nature-focused experience. It runs mainly along the Úšovický potok stream, begins above the Alexandřin pramen spring, passes the Ferdinandův pramen spring and ends at the Úšovický potok below the Prelát grounds. Well-maintained hiking trails lead from the colonnade through the surrounding spa forests to viewpoints, natural areas and rocky paths. This makes it possible to shape a stay around historic architecture, springs and landscapes in different ways, without every outing having to focus on the same theme.

Colonnade, Music and Chopin

The cultural programme also makes Marienbad a varied travel destination. Dům Chopin regularly hosts concerts, lectures, workshops, exhibitions and film screenings. The same building on Hlavní třída is home to the Památník Fryderyka Chopina, a museum dedicated to the composer’s stay in Bohemia. During the season, the Zpívající fontána plays music and shows projections with coloured lighting. In Park u Lesního pramene, there is a music pavilion that serves as a café and a venue for musical performances in summer. Alongside spa architecture, this provides music, exhibitions and events as distinct themes for planning a trip.

Models, Play and Family Discoveries

Boheminium Park is an educational walking tour on the eastern edge of Mariánské Lázně. There, you can see scale models of important Czech architectural and technical monuments at a scale of 1:25. For a trip with children, Přírodní park u Prelátova pramene offers a fire pit, an obstacle course, climbing equipment and other attractions. Those who want to combine nature, culture and shared activities can choose between these different places according to their preferred daily rhythm: The colonnade and Dům Chopin represent history and culture, the spa forests and nature trail offer paths and landscapes, while Boheminium and the park near Prelátův pramen provide additional discovery destinations for families.
