Discover Temny Dul: Aichelburg, Chapels and Historic Trails

Temny Dul combines impressive places of remembrance with trails that connect history and landscape. Around the village, you can discover the reconstructed Lesní hrádek Aichelburg, the Chapel of St. Anne and the former Dixova brusírna dřeva. There are also routes of varying lengths: from a 680-metre Stations of the Cross route to an 8.2-kilometre walking route. This allows you to shape your stay around culture, peaceful exploration and active movement.

Trails with clear measurements

The Křížová cesta na Starou horu leads from the road to a spring. Over a length of 680 metres, it climbs 120 metres in elevation. The route is therefore clearly defined by its starting point, destination and elevation gain. The Vycházková trasa Aichelburg is 8.2 kilometres long and offers a different scale of walking. Anyone wishing to compare different excursion formats will find specific distances here rather than an unspecified route description.

A green-marked hiking trail is also designated as the marked K 25 cycle route. The Aichelburg Trail was extended in 2009 via the settlement of Honzův Potok. Hiking and cycling are therefore among the documented ways to explore Temny Dul and its surroundings on marked trails.

Lesní hrádek Aichelburg and its history

The reconstructed Aichelburg hrádek stands on a rocky promontory high above Temný Důl. Lesní hrádek Aichelburg was ceremonially opened on 9 September 1863. A bust of Count Berthold was placed in the stone castle hall. The bust displayed in Lesní hrádek Aichelburg was made from a painting by F. Hauptfleisch, a model maker from the glassworks in Temný Důl. The site thus combines the building itself with a specific historical memorial object.

To open the castle hall independently, you can borrow keys at the Veselý Výlet information centre in Temný Důl or in Pec pod Sněžkou. The key allows you to open the castle hall yourself.

Chapel of St. Anne

The Chapel of St. Anne was built in 1752 by Johann Bensch and his wife. The masonry chapel has a pyramid-shaped roof topped by a bell tower. It is considered one of the oldest religious structures in the eastern Krkonoše region. It therefore provides a clear cultural focus for your excursion: its year of construction, form and religious classification are as distinctive as its connection to the history of the region.

Dixova brusírna dřeva

Another historical highlight is the former Dixova brusírna dřeva in Temný Důl. It has been a protected cultural monument since 1996. The building is a three-wing industrial complex on the Úpa River, with an octagonal chimney and a former water inlet. Alongside the sacred and commemorative sites, this complex reveals another side of Temny Dul: its surviving industrial architecture by the river.

The centre provides regional information materials and helps you find programmes, places and services.
