Strážné: Ski Resort, Nature and Mountain Culture

Strážné combines winter sports, protected nature and the history of the Krkonoše Mountains within a small area. Depending on the season, in Strážné you can choose between days of skiing, climbing areas, cycling and hiking routes, as well as cultural and historical discoveries. This allows you to tailor your stay to different interests without reducing the area to a single type of holiday.

Winter sports between 800 and 1,300 metres

The ski resort in Strážné is located at an altitude of 800 to 1,300 metres. All slopes are groomed twice a day with a snow groomer; half of the slopes are artificially snow-covered and illuminated. These specific conditions give you a clear overview of the local winter sports offering when planning your trip, without implying a general snow guarantee.

For skiers, a free ski bus runs daily from 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from the central car park in Strážné. In the warmer months, the seasonal “Stráženský expres” is a separate transport option: the excursion service to the ridges of the Krkonoše Mountains operates every year from 1 June to 30 September. Natural Monument, Cycling Route and Trails into the Mountains

The “Lom Strážné” natural monument is located in the cadastral area of Strážné and covers 4.22 hectares. It protects limestone- and warmth-loving plant communities that developed on the exposed limestone bedrock after quarrying ended. It is home to the largest population of the elder-flowered orchid in the Krkonoše Mountains. The former limestone bedrock also makes the natural monument an example of how distinctive plant life could develop at a site shaped by quarrying.

The 76-kilometre “Krkonošská diagonála” cycling route, designated by the KRNAP Administration, also passes through Strážné. For a hike, the “Za zvonkohrou a pivem Fries” route leads from Vrchlabí via the Mramorový lom quarry to Strážné. The different starting points and route lengths help you plan your stay between a cycling tour, a hike and an excursion according to your preferred daily rhythm.

Mountain Culture and Climbing Areas

A cultural and historical highlight is the Art Nouveau Protestant church in Strážné, which dates from 1904. In the second half of the 17th century and in the 18th century, mountain pasture farming developed here, producing mainly butter and the famous Krkonoše herb cheese. Thus, alongside the landscape and sports, local traditions are also part of the history of the area.

Hnědé skály and Hranostají skály in Strážné are KRNAP-approved climbing areas where climbing is possible year-round. Hranostají skály lie to the right, on the other side of a stream, near Hnědé skály and offer around ten secured climbing routes of easy and moderate difficulty.
