Dolní Kalná – Nature, History and Active Days

Dolní Kalná combines a wooded landscape with remarkable traces of Bohemian history and several opportunities for active days. The village lies in a picturesque valley through which two streams flow and is a suitable starting point for visits to the Krkonoše, Podkrkonoší, Bohemian Paradise and the Zvičínsko area. This makes it possible to plan a stay combining experiences in nature, culture and seasonal activities.

Valley, wooded hills and views

Dolní Kalná is surrounded by wooded hills. The highest peak in the surrounding area reaches 497 metres above sea level. In good weather, the path along the Příčnice offers views of the panorama of the Krkonoše, the outskirts of the Jizera and Orlické Mountains, as well as Bradlo, Zvičina and the Staropacké hory. Occasionally, Ještěd near Liberec can also be seen. Part of the old Příčnice country road in the vicinity of Dolní Kalná can now be walked.

Church history and Bohemian culture

The Baroque parish Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary and Saint Wenceslas was built on the foundations of an earlier Protestant church, first mentioned in the 14th century. Jan Amos Comenius preached in this church before leaving Bohemia for Poland. The site thus connects a specific building with an important chapter in the religious and educational history of Bohemia.

Outdoor pool, cycling and shared experiences

The Dolní Kalná outdoor pool is located in the wooded landscape of Podkrkonoší. Its grassy shores and concrete pool appeal both to swimmers and families with children. The complex also includes a children's area, volleyball and nohejbal courts, as well as lanes suitable for inline skating. The 30-kilometre Cyklo okruh Dolní Kalná begins at the local outdoor pool and leads to Rovně. From there, there is a beautiful view of the Krkonoše. In addition to spending time by the water, visitors can therefore choose cycling and other sports activities.

Winter and flights in the Krkonoše

In winter, cross-country ski trails are groomed for tourists in Dolní Kalná. When there is enough natural snow, volunteers from Dolní Kalná prepare additional cross-country ski trails in the surrounding area, allowing people in Podkrkonoší to set out for cross-country skiing directly from home. In addition, a paragliding school offers lessons throughout the Krkonoše at various training levels. Tandem flights with an instructor are also available.

The different landscapes and activities make Dolní Kalná a base for a variety of travel plans: those interested in culture will find a tangible historical connection in the parish church, while paths, views, water, cycling and cross-country skiing offer other focal points.
